2025 Season Preview

National Premier Leagues WA

It’s that time of the year again when we look at the season ahead, and give you our NP-WA season preview. It looks like being another close one, with a number of clubs recruiting well. Olympic Kingsway will be aiming to go back-to-back, after winning their first title since 1980 last year. But they will be the hunted this season, with the likes of Bayswater City, Armadale, Perth RedStar and Stirling Macedonia in the mix, while newly promoted Sorrento will also be one to watch. Also, there is a spot in the inaugural Australian Championship up for grabs for NPL sides so all clubs are looking for a good season to press their claim, so it sets up an enthralling season.

The footballwa.net team takes a look at the twelve clubs, and are joined by "The Insider", Murray Stevens, from "The World Football Programme Radio" radio show, Kelechi Osunwa from the "Perth Football Podcast", and footballwa.net founder Jacob Aufdemkampe, in offering their thoughts on how season 2025 will pan out...

ARMADALE

Alfred Skeet Reserve, Forrestdale
Founded: 1972
President: Mr Chris Bates
Coach: Alun Vernals
Assistant Coach’s: Igor Colic, Angel Andres and Sam Hutchings GK coach
State Championships: None
State Cups: 1 (2018)
2024: 7th
Cup – Fourth Round – lost 1-2 to Balcatta Etna (H)
Goals Scored: 54
Goal Conceded: 43
Top Goalscorer: Pieter Jacobsz 25
2025 Night Series – 4th in Group A

Once again ARMADALE went close to a top four finals spot, but after only one win in their last four games saw them fell just short, finishing seventh and Alun Vernals will look for an improvement in his third season at the club. Their good home form, saw them only lose twice at Alfred Skeet Reserve, but on the road was a different story, only winning two on the road. The club have brought in a number of players, with Japanese striker Masatoshi Takeshita signing from the Cambodian Premier League, with Kyle Vincent and Nathan Ng, while keeper Seb Medica has also joined from champions Olympic Kingsway. Last season Pieter Jacobsz was the star, scoring 25 goals to win the NPL M Golden Boot, and the League’s Player of the Year. They failed to get out of the group stage of the Night Series, which was a concern, but once again they will be in the mix, but only time will tell if they have the depth to challenge for the title.

“2025 will be a very even season. Every club has strengthened, so I’m anticipating it to be very tight at the top and the bottom. Kingsway and RedStar are my favourites this season.” - Armadale Coach Alun Vernals

Players In: Seb Medica (Olympic Kingsway), Kyle Vincent, Masatoshi Takeshita (Prey Veng FC Cambodia), Ali Nazary), Joe McEvatt, Nathan Ng (Rockingham City)

Players Out: Joel Driscoll, Matt Worton, Lachlan Collins, George Ballah. (All Dianella White Eagles)

Skipper: Luke Collins – Second year as skipper, the defender will be a vital member of the Reds backline

Young Player/Players to Watch: Purvish Appadoo and Sam Hocking. Both 18 this year with significant game time in men’s football. Big futures in the game.

BALCATTA ETNA

Grindleford Reserve, Balcatta
Founded: 1977
President: Mr Peter Carlino
Coach: Glenn Grostate
Assistant Coaches: Malcom Tshuma and Jeff Imrie
State Championships: None
State Cups: None
2024: 9th
Cup: Fifth Round – lost 1-0 to Stirling Macedonia (A)
Goals Scored: 30
Goal Conceded: 42
Top Goalscorer: Ben Hinshelwood 12
2025 Night Series – 6th in Group A

Glenn Grostate will look for an improved 2025, as he goes into his second season at BALCATTA ETNA. The ninth placed finish was lower than 2023, and consistence will be the key for the Grindleford Reserve club. They struggled in front of goal only scoring 30, which was the second lowest in the league, and if they had won six of the games they drew, they could have pressed for a spot in the top four. A disappointing night series, saw them only gain one point in their five games, which isn’t ideal, but with the experience of Jesse Fuller, Ben Hinshelwood, Declan Hargreaves, Rostyn Griffiths, Blamo Qua Qua and Connor Cambell, to name a few, they will be competitive again. The way to goal is still a concern, but Grostate will be looking for more goals from the midfield as they look for an improved season, and the signings of Jon Stynes will help that, but only time will tell if they have the squad to challenge.

“We feel good. The young players we’ve invested in over the past three years are starting to mature and that should bring more consistency with performances. This might be the toughest NPL season yet and we’re ready for the challenge.” - Balcatta Coach Glenn Grostate

Players In: Jon Stynes, Kurtis Harris, Jesse Fuller, Dimitris Theodorou, Anthony Skorich

Players Out: Trent Kay, Jonathan Cornes, Friday Zico, Fanuel Dawit

Skipper: Rostyn Griffiths - Ros is the ultimate professional. With all he has achieved in his career, his willingness to pass on that knowledge to the rest of the group will be crucial for us this season

Young Player/Players to Watch: Ben Ognesis and Mathew Tomassone

BAYSWATER CITY

Frank Drago Reserve, Bayswater
Founded: 1962 (Bayswater United)
President: Mr Oriano Colli
Coach: Matthew Sparrow
Assistant Coaches: John Kearney and Matt Lenzo
State Championships: 4 (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017)
State Cups: 2 (2013, 2014)
2024: 5th
Cup: Fifth Round – lost 1-2 v Western Knights (H)
Goals Scored: 53
Goal Conceded: 39
Top Goalscorer: Chris Jackson 14
2025 Night Series – 5th in Group A

BAYSWATER CITY finished last season on a disappointing note, missing out on top four spot after not winning the last two games and finishing fifth. A win in the final game could have secured a spot, but they drew 2-2 and were pipped by Stirling. The club decided to part ways with coach Gary Williams, and appointed former Fremantle City coach Matthew Sparrow. The former Scunthorpe United striker will be hoping to lead the club to a first NPL M title since 2017. He has been busy in the transfer market, bring in Pat Loughrey and Oliver la Galia from his former club, with Declan Hughes, Sean McManus and Jonathon Corness to name a few, to bolster the squad for 2025. They finished a disappointing fifth in their group in the night series, but with the new look squad, they will be pushing for a top four finish, and many will have them going close this time around.

“Really excited for the season ahead, we all know what challenges we will face along the way with so many good competitive teams in the league this year. It’s important we try and get off to a fast start and remain consistent with our performances and results along the way. We’ve brought in a lot of new faces this season, the quicker we gel and click on and off the pitch the better we will become as a group, individually and collectively it’s a big year, as we are all striving for success, that brings pressure and I like that and I’m confident that will only bring out the best in our players.” Bayswater City Coach Matthew Sparrow

Players In: Declan Hughes (RedStar), Pat Loughrey, Oli La Galia (Fremantle), Gyles Davies (Stirling), Charlie Garnham (Inglewood), Sean McManus (Floreat), Johnny Corness (Balcatta)

Players Out: Sammy Dweh, Jon Stynes, Josh Bell, Thiak Kuel

Skipper: Gordon Smith – The experienced Scotsman has been there and done it at a good level and his wealth of experience and knowledge on and off the pitch leads by example.

Young Player/Players to Watch: - Charlie Garnham – A good prospect for the future makes the game look simple, technically gifted and will only get better this year training and playing with better players.

FLOREAT ATHENA

E&D Litis Stadium, Mt Hawthorn
Founded: 1951
President: Mr Sam Albanis
Coach: Vas Vujacic
Assistant Coach: Miki Vujacic
State Championships: 5 (1977, 1988, 1997, 2007, 2022)
State Cups: 7 (1987, 1988, 1989, 1997, 2009, 2019, 2023)
2024: 6th
Cup: Fourth Round – lost 2-4 v Western Knights (A) Goals Scored: 43
Goal Conceded: 33
Top Goalscorer: Nick Ambrogio 9
2025 Night Series – 6th in Group B

FLOREAT ATHENA struggled early last season, but a mid-season surge saw them only miss out on a top four spot only three points, so the three point deduction for crowd misbehaviour really hurt them, but coach Vas Vujacic must take a great deal of pride the way his side fought back last season. A six-game winless streak from round 8 to 13, saw them slide down the table, but led by top goalscorer Nick Ambrogio they fought back and went so close to the Top Four Final series. Ambrogio has moved on this season, but the club have acted quicky to reassemble the squad, Owen Goodliffe and Liam Murray joining from Western Knights and Olympic Kingsway respectively, while Perth SC youngsters John Lardis and Jack Sprigg have also come on board. It was a disappointing night series for them, but if they can start the season like they finished the last, a top four finish could be on the cards.

“We are looking forward to the season ahead, and feel our squad is in a much better position than this time last year. We have a keen young side that will be honest and hard working. If we can keep them fit and healthy I feel we have a group of players that are worthy of competing for trophies.” – Floreat Athena Assistant Coach Miki Vujacic

Players In: John Lardis (Perth SC), Jack Sprigg (Perth SC), Owen Goodliffe (Western Knights), Hasan Asadi (Subiaco AFC), Moustafa Mohamed (Subiaco AFC), Egide Ngendakumana (Armadale SC), Liam Murray (Kingsway Olympic), Noah Kanzi (UWA)

Players Out: Ludo Boi (Subiaco AFC), Omar Diarra, Nick Ambrogio (Fremantle City), Ben Steele (Fremantle City) Sean McManus (Bayswater City), Bayley Brown-Montgomery (Stirling Macedonia), Guy Davies (overseas)

Skipper: Jason Saldaris and Chris Saldaris – Both Jason and Chris have been great servants for the club, and it's only fitting they lead them in 2025. Both are natural leaders and are popular figures amongst the players and the Athena faithful. They also welcome Noah Shamaki into the leadership group as a well-respected team mate and person within the club.

Young Player/Players to Watch: John Lardis and Jack Sprigg - Both have had an impressive start to preseason so far, and we anticipate they will have a big 2025.

FREMANTLE CITY

Hilton Reserve, Hilton
Founded: 1953 (East Fremantle Tricolore), 1979 (Fremantle United), 2015 (Fremantle City)
President: Mr Tony Estrano
Coach – Scott Miller
Assistant: Dale Wingell
State Championships: 5 - As East Fremantle Tricolore (1963, 1964, 1965, 1970, 1972)
Cup Winners: 7 - As East Fremantle Tricolore (1960, 1963, 1967, 1969, 1974, 1982, 1983)
2024: 3rd
Cup – Fifth Round – Lost 1-4 v Sorrento
Goals Scored: 46
Goal Conceded: 36
Top Goalscorer:
2025 Night Series: 3rd in Group A

It’s all change at FREMANTLE CTIY in 2025, with Scott Miller coming in as Head Coach to replace Matthew Sparrow, and he has brought in former Perth Glory teammate Dale Wingell as his assistant. It was a great first season back in the NPL for the Hilton Park club, and the third placed finish was better than most pundits had expected, and a spot in the Top four Finals was fantastic effort by all, and I’m sure they will be looking to go one better this season. Miller has been active in the transfer market, with Nick Ambrogio, Sam Cook, Ali Gholami, Karl Moody and Ben Steele coming in to replace the outgoing. with Pat Loughrey and Ollie La Galia leaving the club. They ended the night series well, winning the final two games, missing out on a semi-final spot by one point. The club have big ambitions, and the appointment of Miller is a huge coup, but do they have the squad to improve on last season, only time will tell.

“It’s been a great preseason. We have been able to see the whole squad over the course of the night series. Myself and Scotty have asked a lot from the players this preseason and they have responded magnificently. We have had steady improvement during the night series and it has been great to see the players implementing what we have been working on. The endeavour and the want to play has been first class. Last year Freo was the surprise packet and it is always going to be harder second time round but a good challenge nonetheless and the playing group can’t wait for the first game. We will be looking for continued improvement over the season. If we get that and we can consistently hit our potential I think we will find ourselves in a real positive space. Looking forward to the season proper and excited to see what our group can accomplish.” Fremantle assistant coach Dale Wingell.

Players In: Karl Moody, Sam Cook, Ali Gholami, Ben Steele and former FCFC Junior Nick Ambrosio.

Players Out: Oli La Galia, Pat Loughrey, Charlie Garnham all off to Bayswater and Dean Hurley to Inglewood.

Skipper: Hayden Stevens – The defender continues on as captain last year in with our return to NPL football. Hayden sets the bar with his leadership qualities on and off the field.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Taj Bingwa – The youngster is developing very well under the guidance of the clubs experienced coaches.

OLYMPIC KINGSWAY

Kingsway Sporting Complex, Landsdale
Founded: 1953
President: Mr Steven Nelkovski
Coach: David Tough
Assistants: Ross Edwards, Willie McNally, Simon Madaschi
State Championships: 3 (1978, 1980, 2024)
State Cups: 1 (2024)
2024: NPL Champions
Cup: Winners – Won 3-2 v Perth RedStar
Goals Scored: 60
Goals Conceded: 27
Top Goalscorer: Joe Knowles 20
2025 Night Series: Semi-Finals – Lost 1-3 v Stirling Macedonia

It was a superb season for OLYMPIC KINGSWAY, the club winning the NPL M title for the first time since 1980, and also winning the State League Cup for the first time in their history, with David Tough revitalising the ‘Green Machine’. The northern suburbs club will be aiming for a repeat in 2025, but the loss of top goalscorer Joe Knowles is a huge blow, but they have acted quickly to fill the void, bringing in former Perth Glory duo Jayden Gorman and Laat Mathiang, while Harley Orr will bolster the midfield after joining from Perth SC. The club’s mix of youth and experience is seconded to none, with Mitch Oxborrow, Ryan Lowry, Aryn Williams, Ollie Annis and Joshua Samson leading the way, and youngsters Lebib Lebib, Tyler Garner, Jon Leithead and Adrian Sinagra all contributing. A loss in the semi-finals of the Night Series was their first defeat in the pre-season competition, and their first defeat in 19 games, and many will have them favourites for the title again in 2025.

“We’re excited for the new season. The club has worked hard in the off-season to retain the core of the squad while also adding some quality signings. We’re looking forward to building on last season’s success.” – Olympic Kingsway Coach David Tough

Players In: Jayden Gorman (Heidelberg FC) Harley Orr (Perth SC) Laat Mathiang (Perth Glory) Reece Kral (Gwelup Croatia) Mohamed Diallo (Western Strikers) Kaveen Waran (Perth Soccer Club)

Players Out: Joe Knowles (Oakleigh Cannons) Daniel Walsh (Perth Redstar) Sasa Njegic (Dianella White Eagles) Seb Medica (Armadale Sc) Calum O’Connell (retired) Shane Cassidy

Skipper: Mitch Oxborrow – The experienced WA State team midfielder, a quality player and a natural leader, both on the pitch and in the dressing room

Young Player/Players to Watch: Lebib Lebib – He’s only just beginning to tap into his full potential, and 2025 could be a big year for him.

Top Goalscorer: Sam Cook 10
2025 Night Series: 3rd in Group B

It was another disappointing season for PERTH SOCCER CLUB finished tenth, their lowest position since 2013. Head Coach Kenny Lowe, who took over from Danny Hill early last season, will be looking for an improvement in 2025. The Azzurri have won the league title 24 times, but to add another they need to improve their consistency, and that showed again in the night series, drawing two and losing one, and missing out on a semi-final spot by one point. The signing of former Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle Jets and Dundee United keeper Mark Birighitti and Michael Scafetta are huge inclusion, while the return to WA for Sam Raik, and others like Julan Kelly and Sean O’Connor, has made the squad stronger. They did lose striker Sam Cook, but with Lowe at the helm, not many will be backing against them to climb the table, but is the squad deep enough to win the league, let’s wait and see.

‘Our pre-season preparation has both been successful and enjoyable, with a lot of really good work put in on the training pitch and a chance for those new to the club to get a real taste of the passion and commitment of the people involved at Perth SC. We are of course, hugely optimistic heading into the new campaign. Now it is up to us to perform like Perth SC did for many years previously and, hopefully, to bring success to the club. We know that everyone wants that more than anything, and all can rest assured that our players, support staff, football operations and board will be doing all that we can to deliver for our members and supporters.” – Perth SC coach Kenny Lowe.

Players In: Dundee United, Kurtis Mogg - Western Springs (NZ), Samuel Riak - Wollongong Wolves, Julian Kelly - Bayswater City, Sean O'Connor - Perth Glory, Michael Scafetta - Messina (Italy), William Formston - Inglewood Utd, Aiden Formston - Inglewood Utd, Marino Gojak - Perth RedStar

Players Out: Rocco Liberti - Gwelup Croatia, Christian Belladonna - Dianella White Eagles, John Lardis - Floreat Athena, Neil Gillies - Kingsley Westside (loan), Ben Stroud – NZ, Sam Cook - Fremantle City, Joe Pollard - US college, Harley Orr - Olympic Kingsway, Toby Snook - US college, Judd Macdougall - Bentleigh Greens, Franc Gamiz Quer - Dianella White Eagles, Sam Pollard - Perth RedStar

Skipper: David Ninkovich - He is one of the most exciting players in the league and wanted to take the step up to lead the squad. He will lead the team through his quality, dedication and professionalism both on and off the field.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Luca Hirninger, Jame McNelis and Sean O'Connor

2025 Night Series – Semi-Final

PERTH GLORY will have a new man in charge this season, with Joe Heath replacing John Walmsley, and he has hit the ground running, leading them to the semifinals in the Night Series. Once again there has been a big turnover of players in the club’s youth academy, but some of last season’s youngster, the likes of Jaylan Pearman, Khoa Ngo, Adam Bugarija and Will Freney all gained experience in the A-League and Young Socceroos duties, so things look promising for the group. They struggled last season, finishing 11th and had to go through the Inter Divisional Play-Offs to survive, and they did it with aplomb winning the final 11-0. They will need to improve in 2025, and it depends which of their young A-League players are made available. I’m sure they will be looking for a huge improvement this season, and after an impressive preseason their supporters will hope so to.

“We are looking forward to the season ahead and expecting a competitive league this year from what we have seen during the night series, although progressing players into the A league will be our main focus. But we want to compete also.” Perth Glory Coach Joe Heath

Players In: Liam Starr, Adrian Pini, Ryan Warner. All others progressed internally from U18s and U20s

Players Out: N/A

Skipper: Daniel Jankuloski – He has a great attitude and sets good examples for younger players with the way he trains and plays.

Young Player/Players to Watch: - They have three 16-year-olds in our squad who have all impressed - Chris Pullela, Alex Bolton and Max Naylor - All involved with Australia U17 – They also anticipate a big season for a few of the older boys in the group in Seb Despotovski, Daniel Jankuloski, Gio De Abreu

PERTH REDSTAR

ECU Joondalup Football Stadium, Joondalup
Founded: 2022
Club GM: Mr Simon Hicks
Coach: Callum Salmon
Assistant Coaches: David Butterfield and Rob Mohan

2024: 2nd
Goals Scored: 44
Goals Conceded: 29
Top Goalscorer: Daryl Nicol 19
2025 Night Series: 4th in Group B

PERTH REDSTAR lost their crown last season, beaten into second place by Olympic, but they were in the mix all season, but only three wins in their last six games saw them finish six points behind the champions. Head Coach Callum Salmon has continued to play the youngsters, with Matthew George, Sonny O’Shea, Oliver and Theo Leeming to name a few, and all played their part last season. He also as experience in the squad, the likes of Daryl Nicol, who continues to find the target, Liam Reddy, Joel Chianese, Blair Govan and Dennis Galan gives them a well-balanced squad. Add to that new signing Sam Pollard, Daniel Walsh, who joins his brother Nick at the campus, they will again be strong. They failed to get out of the group stage in the night series, but they did have a few players unavailable, but they will be at full strength come round one, and will be many favourites to take out the title again.

“Everyone at the Club is very excited for the season to kick off. We believe we have assembled a real mix of experience and youth with a lot of squad depth which is very pleasing. We have also secured some excellent talent who we are sure will impress our followers and provide real quality, helping maintain the standards we have continued to set for ourselves. We took the opportunity in the off-season to add to our coaching staff. I'm pleased to welcome Rob Mohan who joins our team, further strengthening our back-room operations.” Perth RedStar Coach Callum Salmon

Players In: Dhuors Chol, Benson Nsegetse, Sam Pollard, Daniel Walsh, Harley Zoric.

Players Out: Declan Hughes, Lewis Tucker, Marino Gojak, Bryce Bafford, Daniel Katz, Gomo Dukuly

Skipper: Blair Govan – The big defender continues on in his role as captain. A Fantastically experienced player who operates at the top of WA football.

Young Player/Players to Watch: The RedStar are blessed to have many young, talented players in and around our senior program. Names such as Theo Leeming, Ollie Leeming, Matthew George, Sonny Inzalaco, Luca Iovene, Harley Zoric, Nyle Weale and Reece Bantleman will all have a role to play in our 2025 campaign.

SORRENTO

Percy Doyle Reserve, Duncraig

President: Nico Hoyle
Coach: Steven McGarry
Assistant Coaches: Neill Kilkenny and Shaun Kilkelly
State Championships: 4 (2001, 2006, 2008, 2012)
State Cups: 3 (2011, 2012, 2015
2024: Division One Champions (Promoted)
Goals Scored: 75
Goals Conceded: 14
Top Goalscorer: Dean Cummings 29
2025 Night Series: Winners

After relegation in 2023, SORRENTO have bounced straight back, and under the guidance of Steven McGarry, the Gulls won the Division One title, and went through the league season unbeaten. The former St Mirren and Perth Glory midfielder has kept most of last season’s squad, but has added some talent, with Joe O’Brien signing from NPL Victoria club Langwarrin. The striker has hit the ground running bagging four goals in the night series, as Sorrento won their first preseason competition since 1990. The club have also brought in keeper Ben Ratajczak, while skipper Dean Cummings and midfielder Neil Kilkenny continue to lead from the front, and things look bright at Percy Doyle Reserve. The club are on the rise, and have impressed so far on their return to top flight football, and will cause problems to every team this season. They will look to continue their long unbeaten run, as they go in search of their first league title since 2012.

“We are looking forward to a really exciting season back in the NPL. It’s going to be an intriguing league this year and with most teams building competitive squads and a number of teams could win the competition. Our focus is on us and we need to continue to build and improve from last season and if that’s the case that will put us in a good position as the season progresses.” - Sorrento Coach Steven McGarry

Players In: Connor Campbell (Stirling Macedonia), John Connolly (Burscough FC UK), Mark Withers (Maia Lidador (Portugal), Jai Rawlings (Joondalup United)

Players Out: Shaun Kilkelly (Joondalup United), Ollie Annis (Olympic Kingsway), Chris Jackson (Armadale), Joel Driscoll, Byungtae Ahn Jesse Owuor

Skipper: Dean Cummings – The English midfielder will continue his role this season, and will be vital if the Gulls are to challenge.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Patrick Hughes – The keeper was outstanding last season, and produced a number of fine saves, he will look to continue his good form in 2023.

Founded: 1958
Coach: Ago Mujic
Assistant Coach: Stewart Tierney
State Championships: 6 (1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1995)
State Cups: 6 (1980, 1992, 1996, 2006, 2007, 2010)

Top Goalscorer: Ciaran Byrne 14
2025 Night Series: Beaten Finalists

Ago Mujic will go into his first full season as head coach at STIRLING MACEDONIA, and his side ended last season well, finishing fourth and qualifying for the NPL Top Four Finals Series, reaching the final, where they were edged out by champions Olympic Kingsway. They gained some kind of revenge in this season’s night series, beating them in the semi-final, before a narrow loss in the final to Sorrento. The club have added some quality as they look to press for a first title since 1995, with Scottish midfielder Euan Cameron, former Floreat striker Bayley Brown-Montgomery, joining his brother Aston, who has also headed to Macedonia Park. Keeper Nic Speca has also joined, along with the exciting Sam Dweh. They have shown in the preseason they are a team on the rise, and will be in the mix, but need to keep players fit, which hurt them at times last season.

“After last year losing grand final in last minutes it still hurts, I won’t lie, Stewy, Keegan and I seat down after season finished and we all agreed we need depth in our team to challenge for trophies and I think we got that this year and we want to win trophies because that’s what club been waiting for long time and we will give our best to deliver. It should be very competitive season and we all looking forward what’s ahead.” Stirling Macedonia Coach Ago Mujic

Players In: Aston Montgomery, Sam Dweh, Bayley Brown-Montgomery, Pritchard Adjei, Euan Cameron, Nic Speca

Players Out: Gyles Davies, Ciaran Byrne, Liam Price, Andrea Erbetta, Louis Hartfield (Loan)

Skipper: Dejan Spaseski – The midfielder will carry on from 2024 providing great on field and off field leadership and leads by example.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Joshua Bilaloski – The youngster has been on fire in the Night Series, and his pace and eye for goal will be important next season, after the loss of top goalscorer Ciaran Byrne.

WESTERN KNIGHTS

Nash Field, Mosman Park
Founded: 1968
President: Mr Dean Zlendic
Coach – Adam Kostrencic
Assistant Coach: Carl Medica, Wayne Thorpe
Keeper Coach: Nick Stone
State Championships: 2 (1998, 2004)
State Cups: 3 (2000, 2008, 2017)
2024: 8th
Goals Scored: 35
Goal Conceded: 33
Top Goalscorer: Owen Goodliffe 7
2025 Night Series: 5th in Group B

It was a season of consolidation for WESTERN KNIGHTS in 2024, and after promotion to the NPL M competition, Adam Kostrencic’s side finished eighth and were very competitive. They did struggle in front of goal, with only 35 goals, which was the second worst in the league, which they need to improve, but they only conceded 33, which was the third best in the competition. They started the season well, unbeaten in their first seven games, and sat top of the table early. But they then won only one of the next ten, which saw them slip down the table, but three wins in the last five games saw them consolidate in mid-table. They have lost a few experienced players, but have brought in some quality. Manase Abandelwa returning from Melbourne, while fellow striker Alex Pomeroy has signing from the UK. Once again, they will be competitive, and I’m sure the Nash Field faithful will be right behind them.

“Last season we were competitive in our first season in the NPL and we’ll be looking to build on that foundation this year. Our squad has evolved with the new players settling in well and our younger players working hard to establish themselves. Our aim is for a more consistent approach to challenge and make a push further up the league table.” Western Knights coach Adam Kostrencic

State League Division One

CURTIN UNIVERSITY

Edinburgh Oval, Bentley
President:
Coach: Troy Reid
Assistant Coaches: Martin Hogg, Richard Bryant, Simone Sichel
2024: 4th Division Two – Promoted in the Play-offs
Goals scored: 48
Goals conceded: 40
Top Goalscorer: Kieran Witt 20

CURTIN UNIVERSITY will play Division One football for the first time in their history, after securing a place in the play-off’s last season. Troy Reid’s side were beaten in final by Joondalup City, but with Joondalup United dropping out of the State League, they were promoted. This was a great reward for the club, after near misses in recent seasons, and they will be up for the challenge in 2025. Kieran Witt was their main avenue to goal again, but they did concede 40 goals last season, something they will need to fix this season, but the inclusion of the likes of Jude Baille, Alfie Byant and Marcus Seydel they will be competitive and last week’s win against Mandurah in the cup showed that. It will be a tough challenge for the Edinburgh Oval club, but they will be ready for it, and will surprise a number of teams.

“Everyone around the club is excited to be in Division One for the first time in club history. But, after going up in unusual circumstances, we’ve got a point to prove that we belong in this division. The squad have been working hard and building all pre-season, and I’m confident we’ll surprise more than a few teams this season,” Curtin University coach Troy Reid.

Players In: Jude Baillie, Lachlan Hannah, Marcus Seydel, Mackenzie Snooks, Alfie Bryant, Jack Murray, Likhwa Tshabangu, Gaspar Becerra, Alec Radonich

Players Out: Jaxon Illman, Alastair Hall, Kevin Beattie, Rakan Ozrain, Jacob Da Silva, Benji Mikhael, Louis Johannes

Skipper: Jeffrey Ledwith will continue his role from last season the defender leads from the front and will be vital as they start life in Division One.

DIANELLA WHITE EAGLES

Dianella Reserve, Dianella
President: Mr Branislav Maksimovic
Coach – Ian Ferguson
Assistant Coach: John Lavery
2024: 2nd
Goals scored: 53
Goals conceded: 34
Top Goalscorer: Andy Keogh 19

DIANELLA WHITE EAGLES were one game away from the NPL M last season, but they had a playoff final to forget, well beaten by Perth Glory, and Head coach Ian Ferguson will look for them to bounce back in 2025. They had a good home record, only beaten once on home soil, but four defeats on the road saw them finish well behind eventual champions Sorrento. They scored 53 goals last season, the second best in the league, but have lost top goalscorer Andy Keogh, so they will need to fill the void, so the signing of former Western Knights striker Albert Luwi, and former Olympic midfielder Sasa Njegic will help in that area. With Ferguson in charge, they will be once again in the mix, but after a disappointing night series and an early exit from the Australia Cup, they will need to improve, but many believe they will be in mix for promotion again.

“In this league, as always strap yourself in, as all clubs have recruited well and I’m sure there will be a lot of ups and down this year.” - Dianella White Eagles Coach Ian Ferguson

Players In: Joel Driscoll, Matt Worton, Lachlan Collins, George Ballah (Armadale), Sasa Njegic, (Kingsway Olympic), Alfie Wheele, Magai Deng (Quinns FC), Albert Luwi (Rockingham FC), Christian Belladonna, Franc Gamiz Quer (Perth SC), Cory McNeils (Bayswater City FC), Kieran Colwell (come back after a year off), Miguel Restrepo, Gavin Byars, Sam Burgess, Alexander Barry

Players Out: Andy Keogh, Angel Andres Diaz, Roberto Soares, Mitchell Byrne, Joseph Heath, Daniel Odonovan, Henry Curtis, Isaac Toah Ntow, Alen Patarov

Skipper: Sasa Njegic – A talented midfielder who has played for Glory and won the NPL title with Kingsway, and has good leadership qualities

Young Player/Players to Watch: Cory McNelis – The young midfielder has impressed in the night series, and the club are hoping for a good season from the youngster.

GOSNELLS CITY

Walter Padbury Reserve, Thornlie
President: Mr Ossie Pereira
Coach: Peter Allen
Assistant Coach: Alan Dunlop
2024: 10th
Goals scored: 29
Goals conceded: 49
Top Goalscorer: Tony Chandler and Darren Francis 4

GOSNELLS CITY finished eighth on the table in their first season back in Division One in 2023, but after a poor start to 2024 they did just enough to avoid relegation, but coach Peter Allen has been busy in the transfer market as they look to improve in 2025. The return to the club of striker Moses MaCaulay is an important signing, as they only scored 29 goals last season, which was the third lowest in the league and have lost Wade Farmer and Blake Pritchard. They also need to tighten up at the back, this after conceding 49 goals and the inclusion of Italian Pietro Sciascia will help that. Skipper Scott Pereira will be vital for the Walter Padbury Reserve club moving forward, while keeper Duncan Lennon-Black and Luqman Sayyed will also be important, as they look for a better season in 2025.

“We’ve brought in some younger players this year knowing we’ve had an aging squad but we’ve kept 5/6 of the experienced lads and hoping it will be a good mix. We’re under no illusions we know it will be a tough league and we will be installing that Gozzy spirit of fighting for everything. I know it’s a cliche but we will take it one game at time and give it our best shot whoever the opposition is. We know on our day we can give anyone a game and always give teams a battle, both myself and Alan (Dunlop) are looking forward to a 3rd season with our beloved Gozzy FC.”- Gosnells City Head Coach Peter Allen

Players In: Moses MaCaulay, Amro Atta, Pietro Sciascia, Will Jacobs, Seb Stenqvist, Jordan Lyall, Thang Sangpichung, Jordan Jones

Players Out: Wade Farmer, Josh Spencer, Blake Pritchard, Blake Adams

Skipper: Scott Pereira – An easy decision – He has been club captain for many years, and is a leader both on and off pitch and a club legend.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Sean Pritchard – He came through the 18s winning best and fairest been with first team squad and really fits in well, and will push for a place and one to keep an eye on. The other is young Vishal Amungama and Thang Sangpichung both have bags of pace and exciting to watch hoping they can cement a place in first team.

GWELUP CROATIA go into the new season with a new man at the helm, with Basil Lenzo taking over the reins of the northern suburbs club from Ryan Cantello. The club were in the NPL in 2022, but have struggled since, but a good night series campaign bodes well for the new season. The have been active in the transfer market with the likes of Rocco Liberti, Matthew Lenzo, Jack Bardsley and the talented Jacob Rossi coming on board. They were edged out in the cup last week, but received a reprieve after a clerical error saw them progress. Skipper Paul Grant will once again be vital, while the form of Robert Ferrante has been outstanding, with some fantastic set-pieces. Last season’s top goalscorer Jeremie Mba will have another big role to play, as the club look to regain their NPL spot, and they will be in mix.

“The First Division is really an exciting league and we have had to develop a deep squad to aim for the top four in 2025. I think that we have secured really good talent enhancing the existing players that we have kept which will enable us to work with them over the next few years at making Gwelup a formidable club.’ Gwelup Croatia Head Coach Basil Lenzo

Skipper: Paul Grant – The defender will continue as skipper in 2025, after three successful years in the role.

JOONDALUP CITY

Iluka Sports Complex, Iluka
President: Mr Steve Amphlett
Coach: Guy McDonald
Assistant Coaches: Richie Howels and Roy Ballie, Chris McCrone - GK coach
2024: 3rd
Goals scored: 54
Goals conceded: 26
Top Goalscorer: Callum Stocks 10

JOONDALUP CITY has returned to Division One, after a seven-year absence, after a win in last season’s playoff final. Head Coach Guy McDonald has built a strong squad, and added more for their return, with Jaxon Temata, Sam McKernan and Jack Overy to name a few coming on board. They started last season well, with five straight wins, before three straight losses. They were pushing for the title during the latter stages of the season, with top scorer Callum Stocks and skipper Liam Peacock leading from the front, but they slipped back, but made emends in the playoffs. Defensively they were outstanding only conceding 26 goals, the best in the league. They failed to win a game in the night series this season, drawing the opener and being edged out by the odd goal in the other two, but if they can repeat last season’s form, they will surprise a few teams.

“It’s an exciting year for the club to build on the success we had on and off the pitch in 2024. We are under no illusions that it’s going to be tough going up another level and standard, but it’s not in our nature to take a backward step and be negative to try win a game of football. All I want is for the boys to compete every single week and have a go with a positive mindset to win a football match.” – Joondalup City Head Coach Guy McDonald

Players In: Jaxon Temata, Sam McKernan, Jack Overy, Jamie Sinnott, Jacob Wood

Players Out: Noel Disha

Skipper: Liam Peacock - He continues as club captain leading the club to promotion last year. Liam is a true leader and represents everything that our club is all about

Young Player/Players to Watch: Jack Overy, Mason Gallagher - Two exciting players with plenty of talent that will play a part this season.

KALAMUNDA CITY

Maida Vale Recreation Reserve, Maida Vale
President: Mr. David Saunders
Coach: Maxi Van Ravensteyn
Assistant Coach: Ezequiel Vivas Greiner
2024: Division Two Champions
Goals scored: 55
Goals conceded: 26
Top Goalscorer: Samir Ramos 13

KALAMUNDA CITY proved to strong last season, winning the Division Two title on the final day, pipping East Perth for top spot. It was the first season under the new name, and German Montealegre Quijano’s side only lost two games all season, only conceded 26 goals, the best in the league. They will have a new coach at the helm this season with Maxi Van Ravensteyn taking control, and despite a disappointing night series they bounced back to beat Carramar in the Australia Cup last week, means they start the season on a high. The inclusions of Friday Zico, and youngsters Carl Dias and Adbi Warsame has added to the depth of the squad, which will be led by Gaston Bazet, but the loss of a number of experienced players might hurt them, will they be good enough to win promotion, only time will tell.

“We are all very anxious for the start of the season, we know it will be tough, but we believe to have the right mix of experience and youth to have a successful year. We have been the underdog before and surprised everyone. We had a pre-season with up and downs but it’s expected for a squad with plenty of new players that had to get used to playing together. We want to be a team that plays good football, ball to the ground, that is what has characterised this club for many years. We will take it game by game, so now all we can think of is Curtin University.” Kalamunda City coach Maxi Van Ravensteyn

Players In: Friday Zico, Agustin Ventre, Andrea Erbetta, Agustin Sanda, Gustavo Bustamante, Bernardo Fergonzi, Diego Marin Dupre, Roman Gajardo Castillo, Jack Morgan, Carl Dias, Abdi Warsame

Players Out: Jose Zuñiga (Wanneroo), Samir Ramos (Wanneroo), Bryan Ariiel (Wanneroo) and Raine Blauberg (Year off), Farruh Mavlonov (MUMFC)

Skipper: Gaston Bazet- The player with the most years at the club and two promotions in the last three years. He brings the experience but also the hunger to keep going for more. He is our number 10, a number with significant meaning for South American football. We have known Gaston for many years now and he is the right player to lead the team and to represent our club.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Carl Dias and Abdi Warsame – Both our young strikers will be worth watching. Carl returned to Perth last year for surgery after been playing NPL in Victoria. He is now recovered and we are thrilled to have him with us, he is a very quick player, very strong on one v ones. Abdi is the future, he came to us wanting more first team minutes and he has shown throughout the whole preseason that he is a first team player, he is strong, quick, one of those players that will not stop running, he plays for the team and we will make sure the team plays for him and helps him score many goals this season.

KINGSLEY WESTSIDE

Chichester Park, Woodvale
President: Mr Christopher Brady
Coach: Richard Abrams
Assistant Coach: Simon Turner
2024: 8th
Goals scored: 37
Goals conceded: 52
Top Goalscorer: Daniel Harrison 10

KINGSLEY WESTSIDE made a big impact in their first season in Division One, and an eighth placed finish was the highest position they have achieved since joining the State League in 2020. Long-serving coach Steven Dimitrovich stepped down after eight years at Chichester Park. He has been replaced by Richard Abrams, who has hit the ground running, and leading the club to night series title last week. Unbeaten in the competition it’s been a great start to life for the new coach, and he’s been busy re-building the squad, with Jacob Turner Josh Kingston, and Ben Ford making a big impression, while the returning striker Luke Salmon and imports Robbie Linford and Max Adamson have all fitted in well. They showed in the night series they can compete with the best, and a win in the Cup last week at Ashfield, shows they will be one of the teams in the mix in 2025.

“Really looking forward to a good season in a very competitive league. Our aim is to compete in every game, nothing more and nothing less. We have some exciting players and the squad has come together nicely. We hope to compete week in week out and see what happens from there. No secret that the eight years of hard work from Steve Dima and Monts has left a great foundation and culture for us to grow on. Winning the night series really saw the lad’s gel together nicely and whilst silverware is nice the togetherness and bonding of the group should stand us in good stead for 2025.” – Kingsley Westside Head Coach Richard Abrams

Players In: Jacob Turner (UWA), Neill Gillies (Perth SC Loan), Matt Zaniewski (Perth SC Loan), Robbie Linford (Wroxham UK), Ellis Lawson (Barking Town UK), Max Adamson (Doncaster Rovers UK), Lockie Fay (Fencibles NZ), Luke Salmon (Sorrento), Raeez Pandor (Gwelup), Josh Kingston (RedStar), Tarrel Chisunga (RedStar), Jack Roberts (Bayswater), Ben Ford (Balcatta), Jack Lavis (unattached), Jack Carroll (unattached), Daler Tokhirov (University of Saskatchewan Canada), Darius Ghinea (Witham Town FC UK)

Players Out: N/A

Skipper: Robbie Linford

Young Player/Players to Watch: Ellis Lawson and Max Adamson - Both from the Uk and at 19 are young ones to watch. Locally Josh Kingston (also 19) has been outstanding since his signing from RedStar.

MANDURAH CITY

Poolmart Stadium, Halls Head, Mandurah
President: Mr Gary Byrne
Coach: Jon Baird
Assistant Coaches: Pete Taylor, Zach Headington, Mike Green
2024: 4th
Goals scored: 50
Goals conceded: 37
Top Goalscorer: Leigh Griffiths 9

MANDURAH CITY just missed out on promotion to the NPL again, making it three consecutive seasons beaten in the playoffs, losing against eventual winners Perth Glory. They conceded 37 goals last season, the second worst in the top six, something they need to review. John Baird has had a big overhaul of the squad, as he looks for the right formular, to make emends in 2025. The likes of keeper Preston Gilling, Gerard Clarke, Donald McCallum and Oliver Fields have all strengthened the Dolphins, but they have also lost some experience with strikers Leigh Griffiths and Shaun Mukwevho, midfielder Brian Patterson and defender Graham Tough all moving on. It was a successful night series, reaching the final, before losing to Kingsley, but the signs are good and they will be one of the sides pushing for promotion again, and the home faithful hope it’s fourth time lucky for the club.

“After missing out again last season our thoughts are very simple…. win the next game, and if we do that we will be at the right end of the table.” Mandurah City coach John Baird

Players In: Preston Gilling, Max Worswick, Harrison Murray, Oliver Fields, Louie Evans, Rodrigo Albayeros, Michael Mejia, Luke Desmond, Riccardo Mazzelini, Gerard Clarke, Donald McCallum, Raquan Brynat

Players Out: Leigh Griffiths, Graham Tough, Brian Patterson, Shaun Mukwevho, Charlie Parry, Jerry Springer, Jackson Gardner, Foinn Faherty, Afian, Harry Quiggs, Zak Bryne, Dylan Coll

Skipper: Harry Collins - Going into my fourth season as coach, Harry has been my captain, for such a young lad brings so many qualities and understanding of what is expected at Mandurah City.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Jordy Callaghan, James Waterman, Sam Lovell, Ayush - Jordy has been with the first team for 3/4 seasons now but every year has added something else to his game. The other trio are 2/3 seasons behind Jordy in terms of development but it’s nice to see the boys having a pathway at our club.

MURDOCH UNIVERSITY MELVILLE

Besteam Stadium, Murdoch University Grounds, Murdoch
President: Mr Brian Raeburn
Coach: Marc Anthony
Assistant coaches: Gavin Brown, Adam Kirk and Gustavo Giron Marulanda
2024: 3rd
Goals scored: 46
Goals conceded: 54
Top Goalscorer: Iljas Ahmedov 10

MURDOCH UNIVERSITY MELVILLE finished third last season in Marc Anthony’s first season in charge, but missed out on promotion after a loss in the playoffs against Dianella. They missed out on a spot in the quarter-finals of the night series this season, and the Scottish coach will look for an improvement in 2025 and he has been working hard to bring quality to the club. The signing of striker Farruh Mavlonov, who made a big impression at Kalamunda last season, is a great pick up, while Adam Guthridge will also be a good signing. Skipper Patrick Sara played a huge role in their push for promotion last season, and along with Edward Wynne-Willson, they will need to be again in 2025, but the club have also unearthed some young talent, who will bolster the squad. Once again MUMFC will be pushing for promotion, and not many will bet against them achieving it.

“We obviously want to build on last season’s achievements of making the play offs, we have what we feel is an extremely strong squad but also understand how difficult the league will be this year.... consistency will be important so we hope to set and keep our standards high.” MUMFC coach Marc Anthony

Players In: Farruh Mavlonov, Adam Guthridge, Kenshiro Ichikawa, Takayuki Sone, Theo Brebion

Players Out: N/A

Skipper: Patrick Sara will wear the arm band again, while Edward Wynne-Willson is the vice-captain.

Young Player/Players to Watch: We have numerous young players whom we hope will make an impact this year and have done already in the preseason with the new coaching team in place of Gavin Brown and Adam Kirk, so we’re hopeful of a successful season through 18s to reserves to 1st team.

SUBIACO AFC

Rosalie Park, Subiaco
President: Mr Drew Palmer
Coach: Marc Wingell
Assistant Coach: Jamie D’Arcy
2024: 5th
Goals scored: 35
Goals conceded: 34
Top Goalscorer: Moustafa Mohamed 15

SUBIACO AFC were almost relegated in 2023, but Marc Wingell turned things around and the Rosalie Park Club just missed out on the playoff spot, finishing fifth last season. The coach is hoping he has the right mix to push for promotion this time around. They started 2024 well and were unbeaten in the opening six games, but fell away mid-season, and missed out on a top four spot by four points. They struggled in front of goal only scoring 35, which was the lowest for the top eight sides, although Moustafa Mohamed was the exception, bagging 15 goals, but he has left the club. They have brought in some experience, with former Perth Glory trio Dean Evans, Ludovic Boi and Tando Velaphi joining. The club were last in the Premier League in 2018, and they need to improve if they are to get back there, but they will be very competitive this season, and are one of the teams to watch.

“We are looking to improve on last season. We expect our experienced players to lead from the front as well as help develop the young players in the squad.” Subiaco AFC Assistant Coach Jamie D’Arcy

Players In: Dean Evans, Ludo Boi, Tando Velaphi, Daniel Dols, Ruben Faure, Oli Lebihan, Daniel Katz.

Players Out: Martin Coughlan, Conor Hogan, Charlie Breen, Moustafa Mohamed, Rhys Williams, Christian Miroudo,

Skipper: Tando Valepi – He brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and leadership to the squad. Leads from the front and has earned the players respect immediately.

UWA-NEDLANDS FC

UWA Sports Park, Shenton Park
President: Mrs Alexandria Lyons
Coach: Kris Donnell
Assistant Coach: Nigel Burke
2024: 6th
Goals scored: 41
Goals conceded: 34
Top Goalscorer: Jed Afenyo 10

There will be a new man in the hot seat at UWA NEDLANDS this season with Kris Donnell replacing Richard Abrams, who has moved on to Kingsley. They finished sixth last season, but it could’ve been better, after a disappointing end, winning only one of their last seven games. The new coach has hit the ground running, overhauling the UWA squad, with the likes of Ilijas Ahmedov, Roberto Soares, Broden Brown and Mark Bauersachs, to name a few, joining the club. They had a good night series, missing out on a quarterfinal spot on goal difference, but Donnell will have them up for the season. Will they be pushing for promotion, only time will tell, but the loss of top goalscorer Jed Afenyo will hurt them, but they have a talented squad and will be one to watch.

“Everyone is excited to get the season going now, it’s going to be highly competitive with a lot of strong sides in the league. We have enjoyed our preseason and we will continue to build to make sure our goals can be achieved. We have a lot of exciting talent in the squad and really looking forward now to round one.” UWA Nedland coach Kris Donnell.

ASHFIELD

Paintseal Arena, Ashfield
President: Mr Phil Kelly
Coach: James Sammut
Assistant Coach: Jesse Bridgeman
2024: 7th
Goals scored: 45
Goals conceded: 49
Top Goalscorer: Gareth Hamilton 12

ASHFIELD will go into their fourth season in Division Two, and player/coach James Sammut will look to improve on their seventh placed finish last season. They conceded 49 goals last season, which was the second worst in the league, so that’s an area he will look to work on. They were good going the other way, bagging 45 goals, with Gareth Hamilton top goalscorer, but he has departed so they need to fill the void. A disappointing night series, saw them lose all their games, but they have added some good players, with Blake Pritchard, Nathan Scully and youngster Fabrice Feuzi, who has looking impressive in preseason, to name a few, but do they have the squad to push promotion, we will have to wait on see.

Players In: Thabo Mazibuko, Blake Pritchard, Nick Lee, Dejan Lewis, Dylan Lewis, Nathan Scully, Fabrice Feuzi Kikuni, Harry Kpateh, Ireh Balley

Players Out: Gaz Hamilton, Yanis Hamadi, Tony Orobio

Skipper: Jake Melia - The leadership he shows both on and off the field. He is highly respected by everyone at the club.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Fabrice Feuzi - The youngster has fitted in well during preseason and the club are looking forward to see how he goes this season.

BALGA

Princess Road Reserve, Balga
President: Mr Ken Shorto
Coach: Gerhard Janssen
Assistant Coaches: Dani Gros, Mirza Hodzic, Jan Jungstedt and Andrew Keoghran
2024: 6th
Goals scored: 31
Goals conceded: 31
Top Goalscorer: Christian Vest 6

BALGA SC finished sixth last season, and it could have been a lot better, but only two wins in the last seven games saw them finish mid-table. They struggled at home, only winning four games, and they also had problems in front of goal, only scoring 31, the fourth worst in the league. Head Coach Gerhard Janssen will go into his fifth season in charge of the club, and he has added some quality as they look to improve their sixth-place finish. Martin Gorong, Mark Edur and Julian Bian have all settled in well, as they missed out on quarter final spot after a final group game defeat against Mandurah City. Skipper Karl Maluga, Cian Guest, Bleron Mamudi and last season’s top goalscorer Christian Vest, are all vital, if they are to challenge this season, only time will tell if they can, but consistency is the key.

“The Division Two is as strong as probably never before. With teams like East Perth, Cockburn and Quinns who have heavily invested to achieve promotion. Equally dangerous are teams like Rockingham, Forrestfield and Wanneroo. All these teams are planning for a promotion spot. Our target is to constantly improve the team in the performance. Consistency was last year our main problem. Therefore, everybody worked hard to create a squad, which is very competitive and can maintain quality, even if we have to substitute one or two players. It is no secret that we want to fight for promotion. But we are not alone.” Balga coach Gerhard Janssen

Players In: Ivwa Simbile, Martin Gorong, Julian Bian, Silver Kelber, Mark Edur, Bai Hamilton, Takumi Kambai, Fletcher Ellerton, Seamus Edwards, Mark Hill, Ilya Nebylysya, Darcy Taylor, Lucas Reid

Skipper: Karl Maluga - In the past five years at the club, he is a leader on and off the field.

CANNING CITY

Burrendah Reserve, Willetton
President: Mr Jeff Rowland
Coach: Lee Hayward
Assistant Coaches: Alpha Sheriff and Callum Barry
2024: 9th
Goals scored: 37
Goals conceded: 50
Top Goalscorer: Tom Kinnane 11

Lee Hayward will go into his second season in charge of CANNING CITY, and their ninth placed finish was the best position since 2020. A perennial relegation candidate in recent seasons, there was an improvement in 2024 but they didn’t end the season well, only winning two games in their last eight. They have shown the improvement they have made, beating Dianella White Eagles in the Australia Cup last week. It’s been a busy off-season for the club, with the coach overhauling the squad ahead of this campaign. He has brought in the likes of Chris Thackray, Ayden Dragun, Alfie Morre and number of players from the UK, including Dylan Grimbley, Michael Smith and Steve McLeoud. It wasn’t the best night series for them, but a fantastic performance in the cup bodes well for the season ahead, as they look for a return to Division One, they will surprise many teams this season.

“Although preseason has been tough, I have liked what we have managed to do in terms of our roster. Last year we were very young and that showed in certain games, however this year we have managed to bring in some very experienced players and added depth to our squad and that should help us a lot in 2025. Our goal for 2025 is to continue to improve on past seasons, last year we finished 9th and we thought we hould have been a little higher with some of the results we had. This year if we can show a little more consistency, we will hopefully push on up the table a little, however I am aware everyone has picked up and looking to improve so it’s not going to be easy.” Canning City coach Lee Hayward

Players In: Alfie Moore (UWA), Ayden Dragun (Joondalup United), Beau Rahim (Unattached), Chris Thackray (Cockburn City), Derrick Data (Ashfield SC), Dylan Grimbley (Scotland), Kevin Beattie (Curtin), Liam Alderson (Gwelup), Mitchell Smith (Scotland), Paul Leask (Murdoch University Melville), Regan McGoldrick (Wembley), Ryan Brackpool (Murdoch University Melville), Steve Mcleoud (UK).

Players Out: Alpha Sheriff (Retired), Brayden Burton, Ben Godfrey, Callum Shepherd (Forrestfield United), Claudio Cruz (Wanneroo), Domenic Mann (Kalamunda), Gavin Walker (South Perth United), Hayden Collett, Ishmael Greywood (Kelmscott), Jordan Jones (Gosnells), Josh Wallhead (Injured).

Skipper: Mason Langham – Mason will skipper the team again this year. He and I have worked together for several years now, and he will continue for 2025. Mason will have a lot of support throughout the squad, with several experienced players joining us in 2025

Young Player/Players to Watch: We have many young players in the squad with Alex Guzman, Freeman Nyatsambo, Jerome West and Tom Kinnane still only 21. Alex was our Players player, Jerome our Coaches player and Tom our top goal scorer last year and I expect all three to have another goal season, I am also really looking forward to seeing Freeman play with freedom again, he seems to be enjoying his football again and just needs to turn his directness into goals now.

CARRAMAR SHAMROCK ROVERS

Grandis Park, Banksia Grove
President: Mr Marty Burke
Coaches: Ronnie Martin, Adam Walsh and Leigh Doherty
2024: 10th
Goals scored: 24
Goals conceded: 40
Top Goalscorer: Alan Reidy 7

It’s all change at Grandis Park, with long standing coach Gerry McEwan stepping down as coach at CARRAMAR SHAMROCK ROVERS, and he was replaced by Mike Hartley. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for the new coach, and he stepped down during the night series, with Adam Walsh and Ronnie Martin taking control until the club find a new head coach. It will be the ninth season in Division Two for Rovers, and last season was their worst season since 2017, and they will look to improve their tenth placed finish. They struggled in front of goal last season, only scoring 24, the second worst in the league, so that is an area the new coaching staff must fix. It was a difficult night series, with the coaching changes, and they lost all three games, but with the inclusion of the experienced Jackson Dongray and Jack Reilly, they will want to but that all behind them, and look to improve in 2025.

“We know it is a tough league, you can see a number of clubs are really going all out for promotion this year with the players they have brought in and every game will be difficult, but we will be aiming to be hard to beat while causing teams problems at the other end. The squad has a good mix of experience and youth and the players are all buying into what is being asked of them after a difficult night series.” Carramar Shamrock Rovers co-coach Ronnie Martin

Players In: Jackson Dongray (Joondalup United), Jack Reilly (Kingsley), Ethan Gravett and Chris Williams (Quinns)

Players Out: Seamus Edwards (Balga), Dan Holgate (family commitments)

Skipper: Kieran Harrison - Kieran has the full respect of the playing group and is heavily invested in the club through coaching at junior level. Kieran fits exactly what we want as coaches, 100% fight and commitment to push this squad forward.

Young Player/Players to Watch: We have a number of very good young players throughout the club, a lot of these boys got first team experience last season and that progression will continue going forward. Griffin Sture has made the step from 18s to reserves and is now a full first team member so that's great to see.”

COCKBURN CITY

Dalmatinac Park, Spearwood
Founded: 1929 (Spearwood Rovers)
President: Mr Paul McVittie
Coach: Steven McDonald
2024: 11th – Relegated in Playoffs
Goals scored: 28
Goals conceded: 52
Top Goalscorer: Harry O’Brien and Angel Andres 9

COCKBURN CITY will play in Division Two for the first time since 1970, after back-to-back relegations. They will have a new coach in the dugout for 2025, with Kenny Palmer taking over from Andy Thorburn, and things have looked good so far, with the Cockerels reaching the semi-finals of the night series, beaten by eventual winners Kingsley Westside. Last season saw them finish 11th and were beaten in the relegation/promotion playoff semifinal by Curtin, the club now need to rebuild. They went through the group stage of the night series unbeaten to seal a spot in the knock out stage, before being edge out by eventual winners Kingsley. They have a young squad, something that could hurt them later in the season, but the form they have showed so far is encouraging, and they will be in the mix come season end. EAST PERTH

Hudson Park, Girrawheen
President: Mr John Healy
Coach: Colm Costello
Assistant Coaches: Sully Sullivan and Adam Capper
2024: 2nd
Goals scored: 59
Goals conceded: 29
Top Goalscorer - Ryan McCready 25

EAST PERTH made an immediate impact in the State League, finishing second in their inaugural season, but they missed out on promotion in the play-offs, beaten by Joondalup City, but it was an excellent effort from Colm Costello’s side. They have not rested on their laurels, adding former Wolves, Leeds and Perth Glory striker Andy Keogh, who has been in fine form in the night series, as they look to go one step better this season. The Irish coach has also added Ronan O’Kelly from Ireland, while the experience Paul McCormack and Darragh Kavanaugh have also bolstered the squad. They topped the Division Two goalscoring last season, bagging 59 goals, with Ryan McCready scoring 25 to take out the leagues Golden Boot. The failed to move out of the group stage in the night series this season, but did progress in the Australia Cup, and if they can click, they will be there or thereabout come season end.

“It was a great first season in the division, but I’m sure we will have a target on our back after last year no doubt but the lads will be ready for the challenges ahead. We have tried to strengthen in certain areas which I feel we have done but the big plus was also retaining the bulk of the squad from last season as I felt the boys gave it everything last time out. There’s huge number of teams that have recruited huge numbers of players so this will be a very tough league, we are looking for to get into action now after a long preseason.” East Perth coach Colm Costello

Players In: Andy Keogh (Dianella), Pete Stewart (Kingsley), Ronan O Kelly (Wayside Celtic Ireland), Dave Brookes Ciaran Burnett (Phoenix FC NSW), Daragh Kavanagh (Wanneroo), Paul McCormack (MUM)

Players Out: Ryan Murray (work commitments), Ryan McCormack (returned to Ireland), Mitch Pappas

Skipper: Chris Smith - Chris is a proper leader on and off the pitch. He was excellent last season and drove the team in many games with his attitude intensity and overall play.

Young Player/Players to Watch: We have a few good young lads that have joined us this year and all look promising and Peter Stewart has done excellent since arriving at the club

FORRESTFIELD UNITED

Crazy Domain Stadium, Hartfield Park, Forrestfield
President: Mr Paul Mansfield
Coach: Daryl Platten
Assistant Coaches: Alec Robinson and Byran Wood
2024: 5th
Goals scored: 33
Goals conceded: 44
Top Goalscorer: Sherwin Tucker 9

After relegation in 2023, FORRESTFIELD UNITED consolidated last season, and Daryl Platten’s side finished fifth, and he will look to improve that this season. They were in the mix for a playoff spot, but only three wins in their final eight games quashed their chances. They had a good night series this campaign, pipped to top spot, on goal difference by Dianella. The coach has been busy adding to his squad for 2025, with Brian Patterson,

Rhys Loxley and Max Snelson, to name a few, but they need to improve in front of goal from last season, when they only scored 33 goals, which was the worst of the top five teams. Sherwin Tucker was top goalscorer last season and he will be important this season, but it’s consistency Forrestfield need in 2025, if they find that they will be in the mix.

“We’re really looking forward to the season, Division Two is going to be a very tough competitive league this year. As long as we play to our potential and compete in every game and get consistent performances, we should have a successful 2025.” Forrestfield United coach Daryl Platten

Players In: Max Snelson, Brian Patterson, Rhys Loxley, Eddie Garrido, Matt Evans, Callum Shepard, Mitch Norman, Sam Platten, Darsi Makunzi, Jordan Howle

Players Out: Yared Nadew, Justin Onek, John Phillipides, Connor Boland, James Bourne, Scott Witschge

Skipper: Brian Patterson - Speaks for itself really a player that drives standards with a ton of experience that will be invaluable to the young players coming through at the club.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Austin Reynolds and vice-captain Noah Appleby.

QUINNS FC

Gumblossom Park, Quinns Rock
President: Mr Vincent McMillan
Coach: Nick Jennings
Assistant Coaches: Steve Flint and Ben Fairbairn
2024: 8th
Goals scored: 34
Goals conceded: 43
Top Goalscorer: Mou Marial and Maagai Deng 7

QUINNS will have a new coach in 2025, with Nick Jennings joining the Gumblossom Park club. The experienced English coach has hit the ground running, adding a number of players from his former club Joondalup United, including Luke Martino, Joel Prout and Joel Sollitt to name a few as they look to improve on their eighth placed finish last season. The addition of Ben Johns, Elliott Ireland and Joel Gillespie is another huge plus for the club, while imports James Ellington-Soan and Jack Leeming will look to make an impact. They struggled at home in 2024, only winning three, something that must change in 2025, but the club is ambitious and will want to be in the title race, and with Jennings at the helm not many will bet against them.

“It’s going to be a super competitive Division Two this year, all clubs have raised the levels with the quality of players that they have signed. Our aim has to be promotion, we know it won’t be easy and we’ll have to be up and about every week to achieve this objective.” Quinns coach Nick Jennings

Players In: Luke Martino, Joel Prout, Alex Wheelhouse, Tyler Holden, James Oldroyd, Joel Sollitt, Andrew Flint, Janie Gardiner and Ben Wyeth (Joondalup United), Elliot Ireland (Dianella WE), Joel Gillespie (Kingsley WS), James Ellington-Soan (Cranfield United, UK), Jack Leeming (USA), Ben Johns, Vasco Da Silva and Jordan Allen-Rana (All unattached)

Players Out: Only five players remain from last year’s First Team Squad

Skipper: Ben Johns - Leader, Winner and top-quality player.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Ben Wyeth and Paddy Hughes

ROCKINGHAM CITY

Lark Hill Sportsplex, Port Kennedy
President: Mr Fraser Marr
Coach: Jordan Rhodes
Assistant: Mark Sproule
2024: 12th Relegated
Goals scored: 24
Goals conceded: 57
Top Goalscorer: Shane Boyle 7

After relegation from the NPL in 2021, ROCKINGHAM CITY struggled, and last season they were relegated from Division One. They have turned to a former legend to bounce straight back, with Jordan Rhodes taking over as head coach from Rob Crerar. The club played NPL football only four years ago, but the hard work starts now, and Rhodes has added some quality, with Shaun Mukwevho, Delano Adams and Harry Quigley to name a few. They will have to improve their home form, not winning a game last season, and scoring goals was a problem to, with only 24 scored, the worst in the league. It will be first time the club has played in Division Two since 2015, and they need a big improvement if they are to challenge.

“It is going to be a very competitive division this year and we look forward to playing some big games and can't wait to get underway.” Rockingham City coach Jordan Rhodes

Players In: Shaun Mukwhevo, Delano Adams, Harry Quigley, Harry Stonehouse, Josh Rimmer, Liam Cutts, Brad Mallinder

Players Out: Corey McNelis, Max Worswick, Albert Luwai, Joe Moss

Skipper: Harry Geeves. Leads through action and is ready to step up.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Raph Gomba. A handful for any defence with his ability on the ball and explosiveness, will look to be productive and have a breakout year.

SWAN UNITED

Swan Italian Club, Francis Street, Middle Swan
President: Mrs Silvana Anderson Coaches: Niall Hughes and Colin Morgan 2024: 11th Goals scored: 29 Goals conceded: 45 Top Goalscorer: Jack Fritchley 6

SWAN UNITED was in the relegation battle last season, but back-to-back wins in the final two games moved them clear of the drop zone. Niall Hughes and Colin Morgan will go into their third season at the helm of the Francis Street Club, and a big improvement is needed if they are to return to Division One where they last played in 2021. They struggled at home last season, winning only two games, which will need to be improved this season, also in front of goal, after only scoring 29 goals, which was the third worst in the league, and they need to replace top goalscorer Jake Fritchley. They have lost a number of experienced players, the likes of Rhys Loxley, Ben Parry and Ben Greaves, but have brought in the likes of Matteus Carvalho, Peter Gama and Danyel Dos Santos. It wasn’t a successful night series for the black and whites, not winning a game, so it could be a tough season for them, only time will tell.

“Last year was a tough one for everyone involved and one we didn’t expect, our end of season form was better and what we need to start with. We have gone through a large turnover in the off season with older players moving on and new younger faces coming in, which we hope will allow us to get us back up the table and build the club up for future seasons to come.” Swan United coach Niall Hughes

Players In: Jim Oranje, Danyel Dos Santos – Gwelup, Peter Gama – Stirling, Henri Mulwilla – Subiaco, Chileshe Chipumbu – Morley, Connor Boland – Forrestfield, Matteus Carvalho, Charles Oliveira - Brazil

Players Out: Michael Maratea, Ben Greaves, Ben Parry, Jordan Lyall, Rhys Loxley, Amro Atta, Jake Fritchley, Albert Amankwa.

Skipper: Liam Merigan – The midfielder carries on from last season. He was our best and fairest, who is an ever present in the side and a player who leads by example on and off the field.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Peter Gama - The youngster joins from Stirling. Through preseason he has put some impressive performances and he has managed to bed down a starting spot in the side. He has all the attributes to be a good player for us this season and in to the future.

WANNEROO CITY

Kingsway Reserve, Landsdale
President: Mr Dean Bell
Coach: Howard Tweats
Assistant Coaches: Claudio Mastinu, Gustavo Ospina
Player Coach: Asa Sippits
2024: 12th
Goals scored: 22
Goals conceded: 47
Top Goalscorer: Danyel Dos Santos De Souza 3

Howard Tweats goes into his fourth season at WANNEROO CITY, and the club received a lifeline last season, after finishing in the relegation spot, they were given a reprieve after Joondalup United dropped out of the State League, and coach Howard Tweats will be hoping it doesn’t happen again in 2025. They really struggled at home, not winning one game at Wanneroo Reserve, and only scoring seven goals on home soil, that is something the coach will be looking to improve. The coach has acted quickly to remedy that bring in the likes Jose Zuñiga, Samir Ramos, Javier Pineres to name a few, and it has strengthened tie squad. But have they a squad to challenge, we will have to wait and see, but their supporters will be looking for a big improvement in 2025.

“Expectation is nothing less than State League security for the club as a minimum with the target of flexing in the top half of the table.” Wanneroo City coach Howard Tweats

Players In: Bryan Barra - Claudio Cruz - Conall Power - Daniel Stefoski- James Spurry - Jose Zuniga - Josh Allum - Lal Cung - Samir Ramos - Javier Pineres - Noel Disha - Oliver Naughton

Players Out: N/A

Skipper: Asa Sippits - Experienced leader with the ability to inspire, motivate and lead by example.

Young Player/Players to Watch: Daniel Stefoski - Talented Striker with ability to establish himself as a leading forward in the WA game.

WEMBLEY DOWNS

Butlers Reserve, Scarborough
President: Mr David Bujok
Coach: Luke Thompson
Assistant Coach: Kim Sue
2024: Champions – Amateur League Premier Division
Goals scored: 64
Goals conceded: 16
Top Goalscorer: Samuel Mattock 9

WEMBLEY DOWNS will play in the State League for the first time after promotion from the Amateur Premier Division last season. They only lost once last season, having the best goals scored and conceded, and won the title by eight points to take their place in Division Two. They will also have a new coach in the dugout with Luke Thompson taking over from Bob Jackson, and he has been working hard to get the club ready for the new season. They performed well in the night series this season, and won their final game to finish third, before carrying on their winning ways in the Australia Cup last week at Cockburn. Skipper Jack Miller will again be vital in their debut state league season, along with top goals scorer Samuel Mattock. It’s exciting times for the whole club as they step into the unknown, but they will be ok, and with Thompson in charge they will be in for a successful campaign.

“We have had a good preseason which will give us confidence going into the season. This is one of consolidation for the club and we will be focusing on short term goals and adjusting as the season goes. We aim to compete each week and see where it takes us.” Wembley Downs coach Luke Thompson

Players In: Casey Robertson, Hayden Boffey, Rory Hannon, Tristan Sullivan, Mella Loding, Luke Coltman

Players Out: Four from last year who have work or travel commitments this year

Skipper: Jack Mellor - Has been club captain for a few years now and was the natural choice, he is everything you want in a leader, leads by example and constantly drives standards at training and on game day

Young Player/Players to Watch: Taye Thistlethwaite - Only 17 and still in school, played first team last year and keeps getting better and better. A very dynamic full back and I'm looking forward to seeing his progression this season:
