Two lucky second half goals helped visiting Italian first Division team AS Roma beat Western Australia 4-2 at Perry Lakes Stadium on the afternoon of 3 July, 1966. With twenty minutes remaining WA held a 2-1 lead and looked like giving Roma their first defeat of an eight-match tour of Australia. WA made it clear from the outset that they were by no means overawed by their more fancied opponent with Wally Musial gaining his fair share the midfield play.
Angelo Spanio and Sergio Carpanesi caused the home defence a lot of trouble early on but had great difficulty penetrating the defensive combination of Peter Atkinson, Neil Morson and Roy Simpson. Roma finally found a way through in the 29th minute when Diccardo Da Silva wrong-footed the defence to fire past Lou Ivanoff from the edge of the penalty area. WA hit back within a minute when Pawel Sobek sent a delightful centring pass in to Rod Reid, whose shot had too much spin on it for goalkeeper Alberto Ginulfi to hold.
The State team brilliantly matched the Italians accurate passing game after the break. A lovely exchange of passes between Reid, Sobek and Henry Lukoszek ended with the latter finding the net after fighting his way along the goal line. At two-one down Roma’s experience came into play and with a late burst they turned the game on its head with a trio of goal, albeit with a fair dose of luck. The ball bounced off the back of Da Silva’s head and into the net to bring the teams level after 70 minutes.
Two minutes later Carpanesi sped through the defence to get on the end of a Spanio pass before beating Ivanoff with his shot. Luck was again on Roma’s side in the 83rd minute when Musial put the ball in his own net when attempting a clearance. Roma coach Guido Masetti was disappointed with his team but emphasised that the game in Australia was of a higher standard than he was led to believe, adding that while WA were not a technically good team they were fast and hard to counter.
