Western Australia suffered its worst ever defeat when humbled 14-1 by visiting English side Everton on the evening of 20th May, 1964. A record crowd of 16,000 turned out at the WACA Ground to see the Toffees, who were English League champions just twelve months earlier, produce one of the best ever performances seen in this state. The final score equalled the 14-1 defeat inflicted upon the State team by Yugoslav club Hadjuk Split at the same venue in 1949.

WA made the mistake of trying to play Everton at its own game of short, crisp ground passes but lacked the ball control, speed and teamwork to turn their ideas into practice. Everton's star players were wingbacks John Morrissey and Derek Temple who mesmerised the home defence with their dazzling speed and footwork. Temple top scored with five goals of which several resulted from surging runs down the flank before cutting inside and shooting past goalkeeper Peter Tremeritus.

Everton captain Roy Vernon provided much of the ammunition with a series of pinpoint crosses from the left. Vernon himself found the back of the net on three occasions as did inside-right Jimmy Hill and substitute Alex Scott who completed his hat-trick in the space of twenty five minutes. WA's solitary goal arrived just before the interval when Everton were caught flat while waiting for an offside call and Mike Ireson raced through to net.

After the game Australian Soccer Federation representative Walter Sternberg said he would recommend WA not be allowed to play against future international sides without the assistance of strong reinforcements from Sydney and Melbourne. "I must do this," Sternberg said of the game which was over by half-time when the score stood at 5-1. "Otherwise crowds will not pay to see one-sided exhibitions like the one we saw tonight."
