Career Brief

Samantha Kerr has fast become one of the most dynamic and exciting players in the Matildas squad. It was clear from early on that the attack-minded Kerr, who started out with Western Knights, wasn't your run of the mill footballer. She was one of the stand-out players when the State Under-15 team finished second at the 2007 National Youth Championship. Those performances led directly to selection in the Australia Under-17 side and a spot in the National Training Centre program for 2008.

Kerr's W-League debut arrived in October 2008 when she came off the bench for Perth Glory against Sydney FC. The following month she helped Australia qualify for the AFC Under-19 Women's Championship with three goals in four games. A couple of weeks later Kerr repeated the feat as Australia booked themselves a place at the AFC Under-16 Women's Championships by completing the qualifying series without loss.

Aged just 15, Kerr stepped out with the Matildas for the first time in the February 2009 friendly series with Italy in Canberra. The exciting brand of football Kerr played saw her voted the Players' Player of the Year at the 2009 W-League Awards where she also collected the Goal of the Year for a long-range strike against Sydney in Round Eight. This in turn led to further friendly outings with the Matildas against New Zealand and North Korea in the opening months of 2010.

Kerr played all five of Australia's games at the Women's Asian Cup of May 2010. Her first senior international goal was Australia's third in a 3-1 defeat of South Korea, and just over a week later she scored the Matildas only goal in the final with North Korea. That game ended 1-1 after extra-time with Australia going on to lift their first major piece of international silverware by triumphing in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

In October 2010 Kerr gained her 10th cap against Mexico at the 2010 Peace Queen Cup, and scored her a memorable goal in a friendly with Germany. She started every game of the 2010/11 W-League season for Glory Women, returning three goals from ten appearances. A couple of friendly outings with New Zealand preceded Kerr's selection in the Matildas squad for the 2011 Women's World Cup.
