Career Brief

Bertogna is one of West Australia's most honoured players. At club level Bertogna played 228 games across ten national league seasons, while internationally he made fifteen appearances for the Australian Under-23 side - fourteen as captain - and gained senior honours on a further thirteen occasions.

An Azzurri junior, Bertogna graduated to first team football at the age of 16 and in his debut season collected First Division championship and Top Four Cup winners medals. His senior State debut came as a 17-year old against Jayakarta prior to the 1977 Marah Halim Cup tournament in Indonesia. In total he wore State colours on five occasions, a tally that includes against English club Middlesbrough.

Bertogna tried his luck in Europe, trialling with Eintracht Frankfurt and Sheffield United, before venturing onto the National Soccer League stage with Newcastle KB United. He gained Australia 'B' selection for the June 1979 friendly with Yugoslav club Partizan Belgrade. A trio of subsequent 'B' outings preceded Bertogna's senior Australia international debut in a November friendly with Taiwan.

Bertogna featured in the Socceroos early 1980 outings against Czechoslavakia and New Caledonia before scoring his first goal in national team colours in the 11-2 Oceania Nations Cup win over Papua New Guinea in Noumea. With a full season under his belt for Newcastle he toured Europe in November with the national team, Bertogna featuring against Greece, England B, Leicester City and Dinamo Zagreb.

By mid-1981 Bertogna had transferred to Wollongong Wolves, where he played one and a half seasons before switching to APIA Leichhardt. Captain of Leichhardt for two of his six seasons, Bertogna played 132 games for the club before bowing out of the national league, aged just 29.
