ARMADALE

State Championships: None
State Cups: 1 (2018)
Coach - John O'Reilly
2021 – 7th
Goals Scored - 36

Top Goalscorer – Angel Andres 13

It’s a big season ahead for the Reds as they celebrate their 50th anniversary. They go into their 18th season in the top flight of WA football and head Coach John O’Reilly will look to improve on last season’s seventh place finish. Formed in 1972, they won the State League Cup in 2018, but they are still searching for their first Premier League title, and the Army faithful hope this is their season. They have lost a number of experienced players, but they have acted quickly to fill the void signing French duo Kevin Gallo and Paul de la Chaneliere, and speedy winger Gordon Perkins, to name a few. Their Night Series wasn’t the best with just one win, but the squad has depth this season, and they will be competitive and will shock a few this season, but can they make the finals, only time will tell.

Players In - Gordon Perkins, Abdul Osman, Kevin Gallo, Paul de la Chaneliere, Albert Lewi, Henri Mulwila, Laqman Sayyed

Players Out - Chad Nielsen, Callum Mellowship, Brain Paterson, Friday Zico, Vlad Naumovski

Player to watch in 2022: Gordon Perkins – The new signing has been red hot in preseason and his partnership with experienced duo Angel Andres and Adriano Jelenovic will be worth watching

Young Player to Watch: Alex Fisher is a very promising young keeper and I’m hoping to give him some first team opportunities this year to help him gain experience on his journey.

Skipper for 2022: Kevin Ashwood - He brings experience, professionalism and a level headiness to the role and the team

What the coach said: “We have built a strong squad and the depth is good, we will be hoping to celebrate our 50th anniversary and qualify for the finals.” – John O’Reilly

BALCATTA ETNA

State Championships: None
State Cups: None
Coach – Michael Johnson
2021 – 11th
Goals Scored - 28
Goals Conceded - 44
Top Goalscorer – Hamza Hina 4

Balcatta hovered around the relegation zone last season, but a late season surge saw them move six points clear of the drop zone. The club were formed in 1977, and won the Premier League minor Premiership in 2011, but a first title still eludes them. Coach Michael Johnson took over last season and after a solid night series, which saw them pipped for a semi-final spot in the final group game, he will be looking for an improved 2022. The club have returned to their former name (Balcatta Etna) and the Grindleford Reserve supporters will be hoping it brings back the club’s former glory. The loss of skipper Calum O’Connell is huge, but they have brought in a number players to fill the void, with Billy Quinncroft and Jonathon Bouhlas, who returns back to the club from Perth SC, to name a few, they will be tough to play against in 2020.

Players In - Billy Quinncroft, Giordano Sportiello, Jonathan Bouhlas, Kyle Murray, Vlad Naumovski, Diego Marin, Logan Rendall

Players Out - Calum O’Connell, Carmelo Giuffre, David Cyrus, David Perich, Hristijan Jankuloski, Lewis Italiano, Nick Walsh

Player to watch in 2022: Henry Durr – The former Perth Glory youth midfielder, missed a number of games last season due to injury, but now fully fit he will be influential in the clubs push for finals football this season.

Young Player to Watch: - Michael Scafetta – He was immediately brought into the first team squad in the later part of last season’s campaign and performed really well. Now he has had his first pre-season as senior player we know he will further improve his all-round game.

Skipper for 2022: Henry Durr has been appointed captain for season 2022 and Jonathan Corness will be the vice-captain.

What the coach said: “The players performed well for both myself and Carl in the last seven weeks of last season. We have made good signings in the off season and our youth policy is certainly taking shape. The lessons learned from last season plus a good foundation from preseason will stand us in good stead. The NPL is a difficult league and we need to improve, but the players commitment and attitude has been outstanding and I am sure we will see the results of that hard work come seasons end.” - Michael Johnson

BAYSWATER CITY

State Championships: 4 (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017)
State Cups: 2 (2013, 2014)
Coach – Gareth Naven
2021 – 8th
Goals Scored - 39
Goals Conceded – 49
Top Goalscorer – Gordon Smith 10

It was a season of rebuilding at Frank Drago Reserve last season, and an eighth-place finish, although better than 2020, it wasn’t what they were looking for. Gareth Naven and his assistant John Walmsley have been busy building a strong squad, but after a disappointing night series, where they only won two games, they will be focused on an improved season. The Club won the NPL title four times in five seasons from 2013 to 2017, and they will be looking to return to former Glory in 2022. There will be a huge gap in the club this season with long-term President Gerry Maio passing away last season, but with the inclusion of experienced players, Cameron Edwards, Jon Stynes and Declan Hargreaves, to name a few, they could be the big improvers.

Players In - Declan Hargreaves, Jon Stynes, Sam Mitchinson, Cameron Edwards, Thomas Southgate

Players Out - Alex McLean, Gomo Dukuly, Gustavo Marulanda, Leonard Gama, Liam Driscoll, Lucas Cook, Luke Salmon

Player to watch in 2022: Jon Stynes – The new signing will give them another goal threat, and along with Gordon Smith and Ndumba Makeche will cause defences all sorts of problems

COCKBURN CITY

State Championships: 3 (1979, 1982, 1986)
Cup Winners: 3 (1983, 1984, 1985)

Coach – Mirko Jelicic
2021 – 9th
Goals Scored - 26
Goals Conceded - 36
Top Goalscorer – Daniel Robinson 10

It’s all change at Cockburn City with Mirko Jelicic returning to the club to replace Scott Miller. The Cockerels were in the relegation mix for a while last season, but a good late run saw them move clear and finished ninth. After a disappointing Night Series, where they didn’t win a game, many might think they will struggle this season, but the new coach, who is in second spell at Dalmatinac Park, is confident the mix of youth and experience will see them very competitive this season.

FLOREAT ATHENA

State Championships: 4 (1977, 1988, 1997, 2007)
State Cups: 8 (1987, 1988, 1989, 1997, 2009, 2016, 2019, 2021)
Coach – Vas Vujacic
2021 – 2nd
Goals Scored - 48
Goals Conceded - 26
Top Goalscorer – Chris Saldaris 10

Floreat Athena have begun the new season on a high, winning the Night Series Final, and the cup continue to get the job done. They finished runners-up last season, and won the State League Cup, but after losing influential skipper Dean Evans, Vas Vujacic’s side are still one of the teams to beat this season. Formed in 1951, Athena have been in the top flight of WA football since 1982, winning the title on four occasions, but their last was in 2007, so is this there year? The club have brought in talented strikers Robert Petkov and Bayley Brown-Montgomery to bolster their firepower, while former Perth Glory defender Riley Woodcock gives their defence a huge boost. They will be many pundit’s favourites for the title, and not many would bet against them.

Players In - Riley Woodcock, Robert Petkov, Bayley Brown-Montgomery, Aleks Jovic, Alex Christou

Players Out - George Festa, Rob Harding

Player to watch in 2022: N/A

Young Player to Watch: Ethan Momm. An honest player who has been improving immensely from week to week.

Skipper for 2022: Jason Saldaris and Ludo Boi – The experienced duo will be working together during the season.

What the coach said: “We are looking at contending for the league and cups again. We have added some good quality and are feeling good after the night series win. However, we know the other sides have strengthened as well and definitely won’t make it easy. The covid situation will bring another element to the season which will no doubt test everyone’s depth but hopefully it doesn’t disrupt things too much.” – Vas Vujacic

GWELUP CROATIA

State Championships: None
State Cups: None
Coach – Mitchell Prentice
2021 – 10th
Goals Scored - 34
Goals Conceded - 43
Top Goalscorer – Jon Stynes 10

There is also a new coach at Wishart Street, with Mitchell Prentice taking over the reins for the new season. It was a disappointing 2021 season for the club, and three coaches later a tenth-place finish wasn’t what the ambitious club were looking for, and they will be hoping to turn that around in 2022. The club is unrecognisable from the one that finished the 2021 season, as the they look for a fresh new approach with a focus on youth development and it has led us to a near-complete overhaul of their playing roster across all three of our NPL teams. The club were only formed in 1988, and it’s been a rapid rise up the leagues, and they were playing amateur football seven years ago, and under the guidance of President Jure Denona the club is building on and off the pitch, with new grandstand and changing rooms under construction. They have lost a number of players this season, including skipper Blair Govan and Jon Stynes, but experienced keeper Cyril Sharrock, Friday Zico and Gomo Dukuly are a few of their signings, but is that enough, that’s the question.

Players In – Cyril Sharrock, Friday Zico, Jordan Pokler, Gomo Dukuly, Kaelan Majeks, Aiden Formston,

Players Out – Blair Govan, Jon Stynes, Sam Mitchinson, Declan Hargreaves, Thomas Southgate, Shubham Mokala

Player to watch in 2022: Friday Zico – The defender, who can also play wide in midfield has a great engine and is dangerous from set-pieces, a great pick up for the club

Young Player to Watch: Kaelan Majeks and Kade Fearnall – Both youngsters have looked good in pre-season and they are impressing through the middle of the park

Skipper for 2022: Ciaran Salinger is our captain and the heart of our defence. He has been a loyal part of the club for the past few seasons and deserves the armband.

What the coach said: “We wantto play some free-following attacking football and to play without any fear. If this happens, the results and our league position will look after themselves.” Mitchell Prentice

INGLEWOOD UNITED

State Championships: 1 (1996)
State Cups: 2 (1977, 1999)
Coach – Andres Oliveira
2021 – 5th
Goals Scored - 48
Goals Conceded - 41
Top Goalscorer – Steve Sokol 18

Another strong Night Series for Inglewood United, and only covid stopped them, forfeiting their semi-final, and Andres Oliveira, who goes into his fourth season as coach at the club, has them ticking along nicely. United missed out on the top four last season, finishing fifth, and the club have made big strides to turn that around in 2022. Formed in 1952, the club have been in the Premier League since 1992, and they will go search of their first title since 1996. They have lost a number of experienced players, with top goalscorer Steve Sokol the biggest, but they have brought in some young players, the likes of Chad Nilson and Callum Mellowship to fill the void. They will once again be competitive, and will be there or there about come season end.

Players In - Chad Nilsen, Callum Mellowship, Manase Abandelwa, Hermon Habtegergish

Players Out - Robert Petkov, Mark Barnett, Ajak Riak, Steve Sokol

Player to Watch in 2022: N/A

Young Player to Watch: We have brought up Ibere kasukulu and Chris Tilson from U18s, and Darko Ristoski and Hamza Belhassan from U20. I expect big contributions from them all.

Skipper for 2022: Alex Dunn – The keeper will continue as skipper for the season, his experience will be important for the young side.

What the coach said – “It’s going to be a transitional season for us, the club wants players who want to be here for the right reasons and give more opportunities for the younger homegrown players. But as Inglewood has done in the past, we always going to be competitive. We brought in players with the right attitude and mentality to help us produce this consistently.” – Andres Oliveira

Long-time President Gary Marocchi has stood down, with Jason Marocchi taking over, while Ramon Falzon has left, replaced by Marc Wingell, and his brother Dale has joined as his assistant. Formed in 1950, the Azzurri are the most successful club in WA football, but after a mass exodus, which saw a number of experienced players move on Wingell has acted quickly and brought in a number of quality players to replace them, with Hasani Sinclair, Luke Radonich and Shubham Makala to name a few, and a spot in the Night Series Final showed they are on the right track. They will once again be in the mix this season, but will the loss of so many players come back to haunt them, only time will tell.

Coach – Ruben Zadkovich
2021 – 4th
Goals Scored - 42
Goals Conceded - 25
Top Goalscorer – Adam Zimarino 12
The Perth Glory youngsters continue to impress in the NPL, and Ruben Zadkovich will have another talented group of players as they go in search of their first Premier League title. The club entered the competition in 2014, and their best finish was in 2018, when they were runners-up, and last season a fourth-place finish saw them play in the end of season finals. A number of players have made the step up to A-League football, the likes of Ciaran Bramwell and Adam Zimarino have shown they can play at that level. But despite losing these players the club continue to unearth young quality players, and have been very competitive, and it will be more of the same in 2022.

We have a new club in the league this season, well on name only, after ECU Joondalup merged with women’s NPL club Northern Redbacks to form Perth RedStar. The club were formed in 1995, winning the title on two occasions, so the new club will be looking to add a third in 2022. The club will continue to play out of the ECU Football Stadium this season, but have big plans for the seasons ahead. The 2020 Champions have brought in a number of players with the likes of Blair Govan, Nick Walsh, Bryce Bafford and Sam Pollard coming in after a number of senior players moved on. Skipper for 2022: Ryan Lowry – The former Wellington Phoenix defender headed back home last season, and his ability in the air, and reading of the ball will be important, but he will need to get up to speed after being stuck over east during the covid lockdown.

What the coach said: “Looking forward to improving on last year’s results. Some real positives with FFA Cup and Cup Final but ultimately didn’t achieve what we set out to do as a team and we’ll be working hard to take the next step this season. Our challenge is to play our brand of football, perform to our standard consistently, take our chances in games and win. We’ve signed some exciting players and we are looking forward to seeing the quality they can produce week in week out. Season will be tough, as teams are improving all the time and every game will be challenging.” Callum Salmon

They spent two seasons in the NPL in 2017 and 2018, and the club are working hard to return there in 2022. They have brought in NPL experienced players for the season, with the likes of Gavin Knight, James Harmer and Dan Corbett heading north, another side who could win the league in the tightest Division One title race for a number of years, but do they have the depth, we will have to wait and see.

As ever we’ll look to get on the front foot, have a real go, and see where we end up at the seasons end. Some clubs have certainly been splashing big cash chasing the NPL dream, which obviously brings pressure from day one, but the standard and quality across the league is as good as I’ve seen during my time at this level and there certainly won’t be any easy games this season.” – Nick Jennings

OLYMPIC KINGSWAY

Coach – David Tough
2021 – 7th First Division

MANDURAH CITY

2021 – 8th Division One
Goals scored – 40
Goals conceded – 46
Top Goalscorer – John Baird 6

It's all change at Mandurah City as well, with John Baird taking over from Pete Taylor and Kris Donnell. Taylor has stayed as the assistant, but Baird, who was top scorer last season, will be a player/coach. They finished eight last season and Baird, who played for a number of clubs back in Scotland, the likes of St Mirren, Dundee, Partick Thistle, and Forfar Athletic where he was also the assistant manager, is looking for an improvement from his side in 2022. Formed in 1970, the Dolphins were promoted to the Premier League in 2008, and spent four seasons in the top flight, and made it back again in 2017, but it was only a one-year stint. The club have brought in Hamish van Dieken and Matt Brooks, both with NPL experience, but do they have the depth? They have great facilities, but they have been in Division One for the last five years, and their loyal supporters are hoping 2022 will see that change.

We have been able to keep hold of a good core of younger players and have been able to also add some good experience into the group which was one of the missing components from last season. Although we have had a large turnover of players, I am really excited to see how our squad progresses this season, we have a nice blend of youth and experience. We are under no illusions that state league football is extremely difficult and we will have to be at our best each week to get the results we want, if we are up for the challenge there is no reason why we cannot be ambitious and look to put together a really good competitive season.” – Lee Taylor

It will be the clubs ninth season in Division Two, and they have retained most of their squad from last season, while adding experienced striker Ben Wantee and Craig Hollingsworth. CANNING CITY

Coach – Jude Pippin
2021 – 11th Division Two

Formed in 1972 the club played Premier League football in 2009 under the guidance of the late Frank Longstaff, but it’s been downhill ever since. The club have one of the biggest junior set-ups in WA football, and the club will look to bring in some talented youngsters as they look to improve this season.

CARRAMAR SHAMROCK ROVERS

Coach – Gerry McEwan
2021 – 6th Division Two
Goals scored – 40
Goals conceded – 36
Top Goalscorer – Jack Bardsley and Jamie Gibson 8

Carramar Shamrock Rovers finished sixth last season, which was a disappointing result, after finishing top in 2020. The club was formed in 2020, with a merger between Shamrock Rovers and Carramar FC and they head into the season looking for a big improvement. Experienced Coach Gerry McEwan has kept most of last season’s squad, but has added some youngsters from within the club, and he is hoping they can get some consistency this season. Lead by Callum Trayner, Kieran Harrison and Ger Fitzgerald, the club is looking to push for promotion, and with McEwan at the helm, not many would bet against them.

Players In - Chris Williams

Players Out – Owen Coates, James Curran, Tyler Holden

Player to watch in 2022: Ross Jarman – The versatile player can play at the back or midfield and along with Ger Fitzgerald and skipper Callum Trayner, they will all be vital this season.

Skipper for 2022: Callum Trayner

What the coach said: “Finishing sixth in 2021 was disappointing so we'll be looking to improve on that and be challenging for promotion, although we know that most (if not all) Division Two sides have the same thoughts for 2022. Gosnells will be the team to beat, so if we can finish above them, we won't be too far away. South West Phoenix are a team to watch out for as they should really be in the NPL and I've no doubt they'll be aiming to return to the top table ASAP.” – Gerry McEwan

CURTIN UNIVERSITY

Coach – Troy Reid
2021 – 8th Division Two
Goals scored – 22
Goals conceded – 34
Top Goalscorer – Daniel Davey and Daniel Nocciolino 5

The eight-place finish last season was the best for Curtin University since 2014, and after a solid Night Series, where they topped Group C, they head into 2022 with optimism. Formed in 1992, the club played Amateur League football until promoted to the State League in 2014, where they finished fourth, which was their highest league finish. Troy Reid goes into his second season as coach and he has brought in a number of players in 2022, Nathan Smith and Simone Sichel to name a few. Skipper for 2022: Jeffrey Ledwidth

What the coach said: “Last year we put in a lot of work and managed a respectable finish considering all the injuries we had. We’ve retained our squad and added some quality signings, so we’ll be very competitive and I’m excited for what the season holds.” – Troy Reid

It was another successful season for Gosnells City in 2021, finishing the season in second place, but once again they missed out on promotion in the play-offs. Marc Anthony goes into his fourth season at the helm of the Walter Padbury Reserve club, and they head into the new season after an impressive win against Olympic Kingsway in the Australia Cup last week. Formed in 1969, the club had nine seasons in the Premier League in the late seventies, early eighties, but they will be looking to go that one step further in 2022 and seal promotion, and with the signings of Jamie Burns and Blake Adams they will be one of the favourites this season.

Players In – Tom Kennedy, Jamie Burns, Blake Adams, Juan Cabrera, Paul McCormack, Tony Chandler

JOONDALUP CITY

Coach – Brad Haywood
2021 – 9th Division Two
Goals scored – 41
Goals conceded – 45
Top Goalscorer – Nick Koefler 11

Last season’s ninth-place finish was the worst for Joondalup City since they have been in the State League. Formed in 1989 the club entered the State League in 2012, and spent two seasons in Division One in 2017 and 2018, before returning to Division Two, and it will be there fourth year in the league this season. They will have a new coach this season with Brad Hayward taking over from Nigel Smith, and the new coach was been busy in the transfer market as the club look to turn their fortunes around. Skipper for 2022: Harry Clisby

What the coach said: “This season is about setting the bar and lifting our performance on field, coming off a poor season last year we have rung the changes both on the field and off it, our expectations are high and standards set even higher and the boys have really committed and have bought into that mindset. We want to make Iluka a fortress once more and build on the success of our U18s and U23s programs in order to be considered a Top4 team capable of big performances. JCFC are ready for 2022. “ – Brad Hayward

KINGSLEY WESTSIDE

Coach – Steven Dimitrovich
2021 – 4th Division Two
Goals scored – 49
Goals conceded – 28
Top Goalscorer – Simone Sichel 11

Last season’s fourth-place finish was the best in State League football for Kingsley Westside. The club won promotion to Division Two in 2019 after winning the Amateur Premier League, and Steven Dimitrovich has steadied the ship after a disappointing ninth-place finish in their first season. Kingsley joined the Amateur Division Four in 1988, and rose through the ranks to win the Amateur Premier League in 2019, when the club merged with Westside to enter the State League. They will be without influential skipper Jayden Drummond for this season, as the winger takes time away from the game, but have signed Jonny Hulme and Harry Gent to name a few as they look for promotion this season, and they will be there or there about come season end.

Players In – Connor Lynch, Jonny Hulme, Luke Doyle, Harry Gent, Jack Hailstones

Players Out – Jayden Drummond, Lewis Flatt, Ryan Williams, Simone Sichel

Player to watch in 2022: Joel Gillespie – He played every game last season and bagged five goals in the process, he will have to step up after the loss of Jayden Drummond.

Young Player to Watch: I think Owain Thomas can carry on from last season where he started in the 18s and finished as a first-choice defender for us and I also think Cameron Bishop will have a big impact on our season in front of goals

Skipper for 2022: Adam O’Neill and Darren O’Roidan

What the coach said: “Really looking forward to this season as we have a few new faces in the squad so it’s going to be good to see how they go and who steps up for us this season since we’ve lost a couple of elder statesmen of the club. I think the league in general will be more open as opposed to last season where Dianella ran away with it and with the signings Morley and Joondalup City have made, I think they are the teams to beat.” – Steven Dimitrovich

MORLEY-WINDMILLS

Coach – Antony Benetti
2021 – 10th Division Two
Goals scored – 30
Goals conceded – 45
Top Goalscorer – Leigh Morgan 7

Last season’s tenth-place finish was a disappointment for Morley-Windmills, but coach Antony Benetti has strengthened his squad for the new season, with the likes of Asa Sippits, Callum Speed and Harry Edwards, to name a few, have come in to bolster the squad. Formed in 1950, the club were a powerhouse in the sixties and seventies, winning the Premier League in 1961 and 1973. Players In – Callum Speed, Sam Thorniley, Harry Edwards, Tyler Holden, Stephen Mwansa, Asa Sippits, Chris Balazs.

Players Out – Mitch Castrilli

Player to watch in 2022: Asa Sippits – The striker has an eye for goal and is a good inclusion into their squad in 2022

Young Player to Watch: We have a number of young players in the squad that we are expecting big things from and a 17-year-old in Mike Filippis that has been promoted from last year's under 18s team that has really impressed in the pre-season

Skipper for 2022: Danny O'Shea will captain the side in the 2022 season and will be supported by a leadership group we feel represents the club well on and off the pitch

What the coach said: “We started our preparations early with player conversations and the pre-season starting last October. We have an ambition in this group and we expect the season to be a tough one. As a club we have a target to really set a standard for ourselves and the league.” – Antony Benetti

SOUTH WEST PHOENIX

Coach – Nick Carter
2021 – 1st Amateur League Premier Division (promoted)
Goals scored – 64
Goals conceded – 26
Top Goalscorer – Lee Stewart 23

South West Phoenix return to State League football, after the Bunbury-based club won promotion after winning the Belt-Up Amateur Premier League last season, this after a three-year exodus. Formed in 2001, the club were controversially left out of the NPL when the competition started in 2014, and the club pulled out of football altogether in 2019, but they have fought back and last season’s title was a great success for coach Nick Carter, who is hoping they can hit the ground running back in the State League. WANNEROO CITY

Coach – Jesse Bridgeman
2021 – 5th Division Two
Goals scored – 33
Goals conceded – 29
Top Goalscorer – Charlie Breen 8

Last season Wanneroo City missed out on a play-off spot, and their fifth-place finish wasn’t what coach Jesse Bridgeman was looking for, but they are ready for a new campaign in 2022. After a number of mergers, the club went back to Wanneroo City in 2004, and played Premier League football in 2006 and 2007, and won promotion back there in 2013, but missed out on the new NPL due to not meeting the criteria. Bridgeman goes into his fourth season at the helm of the club, and has brought in some experienced players to fill the void after a number left the club, with the likes of Dion Berman, Kaylun Pollard and Daragh Kavanagh, to name a few coming in. Is this the season Wanneroo climb out of Division Two after eight seasons only time will tell.

Skipper for 2022: Aaron Louttit

What the coach said: “I’m looking forward to getting the season under way, all the boys are ready for the season and looking forward to getting on the park and playing for points after a long pre-season.” – Jesse Bridgeman
