2015 Season Preview

National Premier Leagues WA

The 2015 PS4 National Premier League WA is looking like being the closest contested in many seasons. Bayswater City will again be the favourite’s to take out the title, but they will have some tough opposition, with Perth SC, Cockburn City and Floreat Athena all strengthening their squads,so it has all the hallmarks of an exciting season. There will not be any end of season’s top five finals this season, so it’s first to the post for the title, and they will also qualify for the National Premier League play-off, against the winners of each states competition. This week we look at the 12 NPL-WA teams to see who’s in and out of their squads, and where we believe they will finish, with the help of local football icon Richard Kreider and ‘Let’s Talk Football’ host Eamon Duffy, who will offer their thoughts on how the new season will turn out.

It was a season of consolidation for Armadale last year, but Coach Lee Bamber has worked hard in the pre-season to add some quality to their line-up. A young Reds side struggled last season, but the experience some of them gained last season will do them the world of good. Kodi Madeley has returned to the club this season after a long term injury, while UK imports Richard Hurlin, Reece Davies, and Nick Creland, will give them some much needed experience. Striker Faustin Machochi and Sam Loveless will again be pivotal, and if the players gel the Reds will improve, but they will be in the lower part of the table.

The improvement of Balcatta last season was one of the highlights of the first NPL-WA season, and they have kept most of their squad, as well picked up some good additions. Adrian Caceres will bolster the midfield, while Perth Glory trio Blamo Qua Qua, Hanafi Ghazail and Darcy Cosgrove will give their squad depth. Skipper Adam Tong was colossal last season, while David Cyrus, James Sammut and Kieron Stallard pushed them close to the finals. With the new signing Ramon Falzon will be looking to go one step further this season and after good Night Series campaign, they will be there or there about come season end.

The 2014 NPL-WA Champions, Bayswater City, haven’t stood on their laurels in the pre-season with Chris Coyne adding to his already talented squad. The Frank Drago Reserve club took all before them last season, and they will again begin favourites this campaign, despite a disappointing Night Series campaign. The addition of Jason Saldaris, Phil Arnold and Hayden Doyle has strengthened the squad, and with Todd Howarth running the show in the middle of the park, Trent Kay solid at the back and the guile of Gustavo Giron-Maurlanda up front, they will take some beating.

It was a disappointing end to 2014 for Cockburn City, the club missing out on the finals, after looking well placed early. There were reasons for the late season fade out, and Marc Anthony will be hoping they have sorted them out, and his side can push for honours this season, and the signs look good after a good Night Series campaign. The inclusion of WA State keeper Curtis Aspden is a massive pick-up, and he will pin a solid defence with Euen Grant and Alan Carroll, while youngster Devon Gibson and Feisal Zaw showed they are a real handful in the league. The Cockerels will be in the mix for a top five spot, but they will need to iron out the problems that stopped them last year.

It was a season of optimism for ECU Joondalup last year, but after missing out in the Cup Semi-Final their season fell away, and Coach Dale McCulloch will be looking for an improvement this season. The signing of former Heidelberg United midfielder Paul Miller and former Blackpool youngster Conor Ready are huge signing, while Rowdy Yates, Josh Tucker and Brad McDonald will give the squad depth. Once again Jon Higgins and Tommy Amphlett will be vital, while Player of the Year Ryan Lowry and Charlie Comyn-Platt will need to be at their best. But they need to improve in certain areas, but if they turn this around they could cause a few upsets this season.

Last season was one to forget for Floreat Athena, on and off the pitch. Uncertainty with coaches and inconsistency on the pitch left them languishing out the finals. But they seemed to have sorted this out and go into the season full of confidence, after winning the 2015 Night Series Final. They have added some quality to their squad, including Robbie Gasper, Kris Gate and Stirling Lions duo Dennis Galan and Clayton Arnez. Coach Glen Grostate took the reins last season and stabilized the side, and the form of Lewis McMahon and Ludovic Boi will be a barometer of the rest of the side and if they can start well this campaign a spot in the finals is on the cards.

The big improvers last season was Perth SC. The Dorrien Gardens side missed the finals in 2013, but last year went close to winning the title. Taki Nicolaidis has built a new look side, and has added to strong squad this season with the addition of former Perth Glory midfielder Dean Evans, defender Callum O’Connell and striker Reece Vittiglia. Skipper Clark Keltie and Mark Pritchard gives them drive from the middle of the park, while their path to goal comes in the capable hands of Ashley Rosindale and Vittiglia. If their youngsters can add something, they will be in the mix for the title.

There has been a huge turnover of players at Stirling Lions, with new coach Rob Milevski having to dip heavily into the transfer market. Imports Brian Woodall and Nathan Bowden-Hasse will give stability to the side, while striker’s Teeboy Kamara, Benny Kouakou and Lawrence Shuruma are a good inclusion. The likes of Daniel Micevski, Moses Kalau and Michael Pugliese will be vital, and after a good showing in the Night Series signs look good, but they might struggle to push for a top five spot

It could be a long 2015 for Sorrento, after a number of senior players left the club this season. Jamie Harnwell and Steve Neville’s sides can never be underestimated, and the pair has added some experience to the squad to go with the younger players. Former Lions midfielder Jack Slater has returned to the league from Team Wellington, along with Thomas Boss, while Brad McDonald has come in from Subiaco AFC. Defensively Daryl Platten and Shaun Kilkelly are important, while James Morgan and import striker Sean Canham will need to be at their best. The club has always been competitive in the league, and they will be again, but they could struggle with a spot in mid-table.

After their first season in the top flight last season, Perth Glory Youth will be one of the big improvers in 2015. Under the tutelage of John Gibson and Jacob Burns they have been outstanding in the National Youth League, and they have added a number of state league players to their roster. Skipper Jacob Collard and Nathan Costello pin a tight, with the speed of Borbor Sam and goal scoring of Joe Knowles, they will cause teams a lot of problems. They will improve on last season but will struggle to get into the top five.

Last season was forgettable for Inglewood United, but 2015 looks like they are heading in the right direction. New coach Michael Garcia has pinpointed his weaknesses and has brought in some talented players. Stirling Lions quartet Jovo Pavlovic, Aleks Vrteski, Rikki Smith and Daniel Micevski, will give the club some much needed experience, while Kenny Keogh, brother of Perth Glory striker Andy, is a great pick up. Injuries hit them hard last season, so if skipper Greg Sharland and last season’s top goalscorer Ryan Clarke can stay fit, they will be competitive and push into the top half of the table.

In their first ever season in top flight football Subiaco AFC surprised many, and coach Gerry McEwen will be hoping to continue their form this season. They have lost a number of their experienced players, but he has moved quickly to bring in replacements. Keeper Ryan Montgomery is a great signing, while the form of Jackson Dongray and Jackson Darnell would have impressed the coach in the Night Series, while striker Rory Feely and defender Nathan Diaz will have a huge role to play. The club will hope they don’t suffer the second year blues, and they will need to show that fighting spirit again, if they are don’t it could be a long season.

State League Division One

The first Division title will be a closely fought contest, and the prize for the League winners in 2015, is promotion to the NPL. All clubs have invested highly in players with NPL experience to gain the advantage, and the title will go down to the wire and this week we look at how we believe the 12 clubs will go as they try and reach the top flight of WA football.

After leading the league for most of last season, Ashfield were piped at the post for the title, and Paul Dundo is determined to rectify that this season. A final game defeat has been burning all pre-season and the club has ringed the changes and has brought in some quality. Chris Holland, Brian Patterson and Mark Walsh have added depth to their squad, but they have also lost a number of experienced players, but that being said they will be one of the favourite’s for the title.

There has been a mass exodus from Canning City this season, but new coach Paul Oliver has seen some good signs during the Night Series. He has been busy in the transfer market with Simon Elton-Bott, Daniel Treisiol and Callum Roberts, coming into the club. They have improved, and it will take time to gel, but they need a good start, but their losses by far outweigh their gains, so it could be a season of consolidation for the Blues.

It’s a new look Dianella White Eagles for the new season under the tutelage of new Coach Mauro Marchione. They just avoided relegation last season, but showed during the Night Series they will be very competitive this season. The Italian coach has brought in a talented group of players and they will be challenging for the title. New signings Cisco Jorquera, Yousri Gharsallah, Cesar Gonzalez and Yves Mwila, has made the squad stronger, and they will be there or there about come season end.

A good Night series campaign from Gosnells City has given some optimism for new coach Rob Eldridge. The Walter Padbury Reserve club has been busy in the transfer market bringing in Jacob and Caleb Aquino form Western Knights, while Calem Rothwell has joined from the UK, his father played for the club 20-years ago. Tom Allen will be vital between the sticks, while the balance of the squad is young players, brought up through the clubs junior system. They will be competitive this season, and will be tough to beat at home, but a mid-table finish is on the cards for the club.

After taking all before them last season in the Second Division, Joondalup United will be hoping to cause a few surprises, in their first ever season in the First Division. New coach John Evans has been pleased with their Night Series performances and he has added Kevin Baker, Chris Tate and English import Stevie Wright to name a few, to his squad, while he will be looking for big season’s from Stuart Hartmann and keeper James Bosdet. A mid-table position is in their reach if they can gel quickly, but they will surprise a few this season.

After a number of years in the wilderness Mandurah City has put together a new look coaching staff and team for 2015. Former Stirling Lions coach Doug Hesketh has been appointed as coach, and he has attracted a number of players to Hyundai Stadium. Andy Brown, Jeff Bright and Jordan Rhodes have all returned to the club, with Ollie McGee and Jon Brookes also joining. There form in the Night series was encouraging and will be there or there about come season’s end.

Another club who has had a big turnover of players is Morley-Windmills, and after a disappointing Night Series the signs are poor for the season ahead. The large number of players leaving the club will leave a huge hole, and coach Ray Blair has worked hard to attract players to Wotton Reserve, and he has added former Perth keeper Luke Martino, and Chris Catalano to name a few. It could be a long season for the club, and if they don’t get off to a good start, and they will be one of the clubs fighting against relegation.

The 2014 First Division Champions Shamrock Rovers Perthwill be strong favorites to repeat that feat this season. Rovers’ were strong side last season, and Coach John O’Reilly has tinkered with the squad bringing in some experienced imports to add to it. Sean Browne has joined from Inglewood United, while imports Graham Caffrey and Steve Sheridan are good signings. The loss of Charlie Kenna is a huge blow but the quality they have in the squad, they will be contention once again.

It’s a return off sorts for South West Phoenix; the South West club has reverted back to its former name for the new season. Coach Trent Hathaway has seen a number of their big names leave, but he has been busy in the transfer marker bringing in Ryan Francis from Inglewood, and Oliver Robertson from the Glory, and adding some talented local players. They have a great home record, only losing one game last season, and finished third, and it looks like they will be in contention again this time around.

It was a season of consolidation at Swan United last year, but Salv Todaro will be looking for a big improvement from his chargers this season. The experience coach will utilize the clubs young players, but they will be missing some old heads to lead the young group through the season which could leave them short. The club ended last season well and finished mid table, and repeat this season looks on the cards, but they will be good enough to stay in the division.

After an improved 2014, UWA-Nedlands FC are ticking along nicely, and James Rae has added to his stocks as they look for a good season. They had a late season dip last year, but with the likes of Sam Stone, Kieran Devitt and Josh Marrocchi will improve the squad and they will be competitive, but it looks like a mid-table finish is on the cards for the club, but could be little higher should the new look side find their rhythm early.

There has been a changing of the guard at Western Knights, with Andy Thorburn appointed as head coach, with Robbie Dunn moving to the Director of Football position at the club. The Nash Field club will be pushing for a return to top flight football after relegation in 2012, and the signs look good, after taking out the State League Night Series. John Migas has made a welcome return to WA football and along with David Onoforo and Dean Aplegren the squad looks strong and they are the team to beat for the title

State League Division Two

Like last season there will be plenty of highs and lows in this year’s Division Two campaign. Forrestfield United and Rockingham city have been installed as favourites to win promotion, but Fremantle City, Wanneroo City and Curtin University will all have their say. This week the footballwa.net team has a look how the season will turn out

After a disappointing first season in the league, Balga will be looking to make strides forward this season. New Coach Bobby Taneski has joined from Balcatta, and the club will hope he can point them in the right direction. It will be a tough task for the Princess Park Reserve club, but he has added a number of players to bolster the clubs playing stocks. They have a group of players who will work hard for each other, and will be more competitive this season and will surprise a few teams this season.

It was a season of optimism for Curtin University, in their first in the Saturday competition. A fourth place finish was a good return and coach Kevin Burton and Campbell Ballantyne, have again brought in players to stabilize the playing roaster. Ranjeet Sekhom and Aaron Barnett have joined from UWA-Nedlands, while import Shaun Reynoldson is a huge signing. They were very competitive last season, and will be again, and a top five spot is on the cards for the club.

There first season in the competition was tough for Ellenbrook United, but the Arbor Grove Reserve club survived and will be looking for an improvement in 2015. The club, only formed seven years ago, has made giant strides, and key roles await keeper Jake Bungert, Jarrod Wilson and Paul Mason this season. Again this year is all about competing, and to pick up a few wins along the way will be a bonus, but they will be in the relegation fight

Most pundits have installed Forrestfield United as favorites to take out the title, and Rob Banjac has built a strong squad. Keeper Brad Eiffe, Trent Wood and Rhys Loxley came in last season and the club have added Scott Barker, Malcolm Tshuma and seen the return to football of former state striker Ben Rodgers. Last season petered out for the Hartfield Park club, and although finishing third, they would have been disappointed, so expect them to put that right this season.

Things are on the up at Fremantle City, and the Hilton Park club goes into the new season with optimism. The port side are steadily building momentum under new coach Steve Plucknett and once the likes Maddy Holman, Angus Vos, Andrew Ambrogio and Ty Fenwick really start to fire they will improve on their sixth place finish last season. If they are able to consistently put the same side out on the park then that will happen.

A seventh place finish was a little disappointing for Joondalup City, but they will be looking to press on in 2015. The northern suburbs club has made huge advances since they entered the competition in 2012, taking out the title in 2013. However, a couple of key departures will have a detrimental effect while resources will be stretched by increased competition across the league. Mark Tebbutt, Sean Quinn and keeper Joe Smith will be important as they look to bounce back, a top four spot is on the cards.

It was a disappointing return to Saturday football for Kelmscott Roos last season, the Fyre Park club finishing at the bottom of the table, and only stayed in the league because there was no relegation. A new coach was appointed in the Night Series, but Dave Boden has now left the club. It was a poor pre-season for the club, and the signs don’t look good. The odds to stay in the league are stacked against again, but if they can win a few early games it could keep them up, but that is unlikely.

The inconsistent form hurt Kingsway Olympic last season, and they have looked to rectify that by bringing in experienced Coach Tom Kilkelly for the new season. They finished in eighth last year, winning only seven games, and the new coach has begun to remold the side. Adam Pygrum, Mark Donnelly and Jimmy McPhail will give the side experience, while Wayne Culverwood will again be vital. They will improve but they will only finish mid-table.

It was a stellar season, for Melville City, and a fifth place position was a great effort for Gavin Brown’s side. The loss of Robbie Gasper is a huge blow, but with Matt Donlevy and Liam McLaughlin influential, the Len Shearer Reserve side will look to continue their improvement. Their squad might not be strong enough to take out the title, but a top half of the table position is on the cards.

In their first season in the competition Quinns FC found it tough, but they need to press on this year. Coach Glen Moore has revitalized his squad after finishing ninth last year, but the Gumblossom Park club has seen plenty of movement in and out of the club. Jay Marsden, Gareth Davies and Mark Tenney have strengthen the squad, but it could be a tough season, and they will need to play well to stay in the division.

It was a year of consolidation for Rockingham City in 2014, after relegation, but Coach Rob Crerar has steadied the ship and they will be searching for promotion this campaign.
