2005 Night Series

Inglewood United Wins Night Series

Inglewood United claimed just their second ever Night Series title by trouncing Swan I.C. 3-0 in this evenings Final at Litis Stadium. Play had been underway just 3 minutes when Michael Baczyinski played a well weighted through ball into the path of Jason Colli who slipped the ball under the on-coming Cory Hugo to give Inglewood the upper hand. Kevin Griffiths made his way down the right flank not long after and crossed low into the area where Andre Sarpe slammed his shot just the wrong side of the upright. Swan were doing well to absorb the near constant pressure but on 14 minutes there was no stopping Inglewood as Trevor Hatton halted Baczynski's run only to have Dean Apelgren storm through and send the sweetest of chips over Cory Hugo and into the net. It took until midway through the half for Swan to muster their first genuine attack which ended with Scott Campbell's low effort being scooped up by Oliver Taseski. It was very nearly three-nil on the half hour when a free-kick from Sarpe looped over the defensive wall and was spectacularly kept out of the top corner by Cory Hugo at full stretch. The last play of the half was a Miki Vujacic free-kick hit low through a crowded area to Taseski on the line.

The half-time address of Gary Marocchi had the desired effect and Swan began the new second period a much stronger proposition. Tom Shepheard got on the end of a Mathers cross from the left but his header was brilliantly tipped over by Taseski, and from the resulting corner Tony Cumace nodded narrowly over the crossbar. In an attempt to shake things up Marocchi made a triple substitution in the 55th minute which brought Paul Lincoln, Damien Catalano and Danyal Bennet into the game. But within minutes Inglewood almost increased their lead through some individual brilliance from Baczynski whose dipping shot from distance cannoned back off the bar. Inglewood were limiting the effectiveness of Swans attacks by restricting the supply lines coming through the centre of the park. Even so, the black and whites found space down the flanks and in the 71st minute Bennett delivered the ball to Shepheard who slid his shot wide after beating an opponent. And in the minutes that followed Lincoln hit the bar, then Catalano blazed high from close-range as Swan sought a way back into the game. But Inglewood weren't about to let the game slip and with two minutes remaining Rory Mouttet put the icing on the cake by tapping in unmarked from 2-metres following terrific lead-up work by Greg Sharland and Colli.
