2004 Night Series

Perth Wins Night Series

Perth S.C. have claimed the first trophy of 2004 with a 3-1 demolition of Western Knights in the final of the Night Series at Litis Stadium. From the opening kick Perth went on the attack to establish a pattern of play that would dominate this match. Much of their drive came from an electrifying performance by central midfielder Rob Giorgi along with Todd Howarth and Daniel Micevski who were dominant on their respective flanks. The Blues first chance on goal came via David Onoforo who was quickly on to a ball played over the Knights defence only to toe-poke his shot just wide as Tommi Tomich narrowed the angle. A few minutes later Onoforo collected a Howarth throw-in to wriggle between two defenders but on this occasion his shot was straight at the goalkeeper. With little opportunity to play the game on their terms the Knights were forced to spent the opening exchanges on the defensive.

If the Knights thought the going was tough then their task was made all the more difficult after 23 minutes when Stuart Montgomery received his marching orders for lashing out at David Micevski in full view of the fourth official. Six minutes later Mark Pottier caught Tomich unsighted with a powerful drive from 18-metres that crashed into the base of the upright. Through some sublime passing, deft touches and great movement Perth went forward time and time again before being rewarded three minutes from the interval. From wide on the right Pottier floated the ball into the heart of the 18-yard box where David Annal and Jason Williams succeeded only in putting the ball at the feet of Onoforo who rounded Tomich to score the crucial opening goal.

Any hopes the Knights had of getting back in the match were dashed five minutes into the second half when Daniel Micevski’s cross from the right was nodded down by Aaron Cole and into the path of Giorgi who volleyed in from 6-metres. For the next fifteen minutes Perth took up camp in the Knights half to which they had no response. Howarth swung a low free-kick around the defensive wall but found Tomich well positioned to save at the near post. A few minutes later Daniel Micevski brilliantly brought under control a high ball from Howarth before turning his marker only to shoot over the crossbar. The outcome was assured by Howarth who waltzed past three challenges inside the box then side-stepped Tomich to net after 58 minutes.

With their hands on the trophy Perth eased off the intensity and allowed their opponents some shooting practice. It took until the 70th minute for Robert Scarparolo to be called into action but he wasn’t troubled by Lukic Jukic’s volley from 17-metres. Substitute Greg Montenegro stretched Scarparolo not long after when he found space in the area, then a powerful shot on the turn from Daniel Trim which the Perth ‘keeper deflected wide for a corner. Three minutes from full-time the Knights bagged a classy consolation goal with Claus Nielsen slotting to Trim who controlled with his first touch and blasted beyond Scarparolo with his second from just inside the box. Perth were in red-hot form this evening, totally dominating play from the opening minutes and with contributors in every position. “My boys worked hard and trained for this,” commented Graham Normanton who’s lead Perth to three Night Series titles in the past four years. “Their application was terrific.”
