1985 Squads

The 1985 Premier League season, or State League as it was called then, was probably the most exciting year that the local league has seen on and off the field.

Supporters of the time will remember that was the year we had the green lift-out section of the old Weekend News, which contained extensive coverage of the WAFL and local soccer, each game was reported and was available to clubs just hours after the completion of the game. The magazine "Star Soccer" was also around at the time, it was available at each club before every game, which had reports, previews, pictures and other articles about soccer in Western Australia.

It was also the year when small highlights of the match of the round was shown on the old World of Sport program on Channel 7 each Sunday morning. Results of the games was also shown most times on each channels sports segment during the Saturday night news.

On the field West Perth Macedonia won their third successive league title, while Spearwood Dalmatinac won the D’Orsogna Cup for the third year in a row.

Spearwood Dalmatinac had finished runners up to Macedonia in the two previous seasons, and were determined for it not to happen again, however it was not to be, with Macedonia winning on goal difference.

The relegation system also made the season exciting, with North Perth Croatia and Balga trying to avoid relegation, Balga seemed doomed after being in the bottom two for most of the season and losing to North Perth Croatia 3-1 with only two games to go, but a shock 3-2 win against East Fremantle Tricolore still gave the club hope of avoiding the drop in the last round.

With one round to go West Perth Macedonia and Spearwood Dalmatinac both had 49 points, at the bottom North Perth Croatia and Balga had 18 points, and Kingsway Olympic who was considered safe being in mid table a few weeks earlier appeared a relegation threat with 20 points.

It was by chance that the teams hoping to avoid relegation were playing the clubs wanting to win the championship, with Macedonia playing Kingsway Olympic, and Dalmatinac at home to Croatia, while Balga played mid table team Inglewood Kiev.
